Yes, Amoisonic made the model VDR2000 which we still have one here. Use it
for no mess transfer from tape to CD in VCD or SVCD format.
SVCD is great for PC users who dont have a dvd drive (lots dont) and the
quality is great
Downside is short run time

The VDR2000 has a couple of things to watch out for:
You MUST have the remote - if you dont get this then you are cactus! We had
to get ours from USA because the guy who sold it to us 'lost' it - without
the remote you cannot finalise any disc - thats means of course, it will not
play anywhere else!
2nd, our unit has a problem in that it 'drops out' or loses sync quite
easily - symptom is 'picture freezes and sound becomes a buzzing mess' -
only thing is to start again.
Cueing a job up for transfer is 'tricky' to say the least - when you hit
'RECORD' it takes 3-4 seconds to come ready and if you pause your input
signal (the tape) then you dont have sync and all sorts of horrible things
happen. We have worked around these problems but you should be aware.
The VDR2000 was also marketed under other names (cant remember them though)
and you can find them on eBay from time to time - but dont pay much.
Hope this all helps

thanks for the comprehensive list! Hrm, it looks like it wouldn't
be very suitable for my use, as there is no second chance to
re-record. :)

ended up getting an LG DVD+/- R/RW recorder for about $570.
Seems pretty good, the second recording ended up in "Writing
disc..... Unknown error!" though. The third recording worked
like a charm. Hopefully the error doesn't happen again! Not
a very helpful error message either. Here's to linear recording
systems where the moment it's recorded, it's recorded. No TOC
crap. :)

thanks!

I'm also a Terapin user. Very happy it does all thats asked of it. Note that it is only capable of vcd 1.1 standard. But dubbing straight to it from the dvb-t hdd, via s-video give quite reasonable results, depending in what tv screen type you have.

I've kept to this 'Terapin' method as a videocd's performance on a plasma or lcd screen is of comparable quality as a movie from a dvd being displayed on the same lcd/plasma screen.
I intend getting a plasm or lcd display which is why I'll never bother with a dvd recorder. A dvd recorder is a waste of time and money unless you need the better quality needed for a large 'crt' display.

There is another way...
Refer to the 'PC User' April 2004 edition pages 68 - 73 where there is great article on the K-VCD format that is burnt on a pc. This is capable of holding a 3 hours movie on the one cdr disk.
