View Full Version : Seven, Ten 'no' to new channels

The chances of new digital channels being delivered across Telstra's pay TV
cable infrastructure and into people's homes via Foxtel's set-top boxes have
suffered a setback.
Seven Network, the TV station that pushed hardest for access, said it had no
plans to apply for any of the 21 channels up for grabs.
Telstra began calling for applications for the 21 digital pay TV broadcast
channels last month and interested parties have until tomorrow to apply. The
telco giant is running the application process because the channels would be
broadcast over its hybrid fibre coaxial, or HFC, cable network.
Telstra and Foxtel must allow third parties access to their analogue and
digital pay TV infrastructure as per an Australian Competition and Consumer
Commission ruling earlier this year. But Kerry Stokes's Seven Network, whose
appeal over the ACCC's decision will be heard by the Australian Competition
Tribunal in August, said it would not be making an application because the
costs involved were too high.
The channel's reserve price is $750,000 a year and it's estimated accessing
Foxtel's set-top box infrastructure would cost a would-be payTV channel
operator about $250 a subscriber.
On top of that, a channel operator would need to have TV-production
facilities to produce content as well as its own customer call centres and
billing operations.
Industry sources said that all up, running just one channel would cost at
least $35 million.............

Of course foxtel are out to make a buck, but apart from that, I don't
understand why they cant just pick up the FTA digital feed and pump it down
the cable. I mean they aren't doing much more for nine, SBS and ABC. It's
such a pain to have to use the FTA digital set top box just for two
channels.

Considering 7 are not transmitting HD 1080, won only 2 logies (thanks to
Home and Away) who cares really? I mean even the ABC won 4.

I didnt realize that a how good a station was gets measured by how many
logies it won all that means is that people who buy tv week (old people)
dont watch channel 7. ABC won 4 logies cos old people watch ABC.

Not to mention that PBL own 9, Crown Casino and TV Week. So all parts
of the Logies they own, and their staff count the votes. Not saying
they rig the voting though.

You incorrectly spelt 'because' - 'cos' ; 'don't' - 'dont' (And no a
missing apostrophe isn't a grammatical error, it's a spelling error)

calling me
On what grounds are you calling me "this forum's arsehole"? Simply because I
pointed out Ch 7 will NOT be transmitting in true 1080 like the other
Networks. Interesting how the morons of this N/G are more interested on the
secondary part of my post. Obviously 7 must screen better cartoons.
