I have the 50" Pioneer PDP-504HDG plasma connected to a Panasonic HD STB QTR 2140 and Pioneer HDMI DVD Player S969.

I'm very happy with the images etc but I am mystified as to why the Pioneer screen size change facility does not work with the STB. It does when I use the built in Pioneer analogue tuner.

How can I make the Pioneer screen change facility work so I can stretch the irritating 4:3 images ?

your pioneer analogue tuner is a crappy 4x3 analogue tuner
you need to stretch it or risk screen burn

your panasonic is a 16 x 9 digital tuner designed to produce 16 x 9
pictures through your 16 x 9 screen
anything else is incorrect.

if you have a problem with a 4 x 3 picture being shown in its correct
aspect ratio then
either
1) go to your pioneer tuner,
2) change stations on your set top box
3) complain to your tv station and ask them to show only new 16 x 9
material.
4) wait till the next show or
commercial or station id comes on in 16 x9.

change your panasonic box to 4 x 3 picture in the panasonic menu then
use your pioneer to stretch the picture and watch an abomination at
your own leisure.

Reading this confirms that some people should stick to analog television
with a crappy 4:3 tv

I am glad I don't have to go around to your house and watch the stretched
images.

What a waste of good equipment.

You didn't understand what I was asking - why is it that the Pioneer screen size change facility works with the Pioneer analogue, tuner, DVDs but not the STB box.

What's different about the signal ?

digital vs analogue 4x3 vs 16 x9 and you don't know the difference?

ok lets put it simple terms,.......do you know the difference between
a square and a rectangle?

4 x3 is more like a square (your analogue tuner)

16 x9 is more like a rectangle.(your digital tuner)

your plasma is 16 x 9

the digital 16 x9 picture from your tv station is always 16 x9
whether you see it as a 16 x9 picture or not,
so when they have 4 x3 showing, you have a 4 x 3 picture with
black lines down the side making up a 16 x9 picture from the tv
station......

In short it is always 16 x9 from your set top box whether there is
black lines on the side or not.

so you have as much chance of stretching the picture and getting rid
of the black lines as you have in chopping 1/3 of a 16 x9 picture out
and stretching the rest back onto your entire plasma 16 x9 screen.
