i have a problem with my surround sound

my dvd player ( lg dc593w ) only has digital audio output and my amplifier ( xms-1338 ) only has 5.1 inputs ( analogue??).

can i connect them up using some sort of converter or have i wasted my money.

i have them connected in stereo but this defeats the purpose of buying a dvd player.

someone else posted the same question in dec 2000, but i can't view it ( too old? )

thanks

You need a decoder to take the digital signal and "decode' it into the 5.1 channels.
So the signal goes like this

DVD Player -> Decoder -> Amplifier-> Speakers

depending on which one you bought first, the lg dvd player or the xms amp.

You need to invest your money on the amplifier which accepts both optical and analogue as well as built-in decoder. No matter how cheap your dvd player is, it will sound as good if you have a decent amp. It is also compatible with any dvd player you buy, either the player has only analouge or digital output.

So if you purchased the amp recently, bring it back add throw in a few more bucks and upgrade your amp.

If this is not the case, bring back the dvd player and swap it with a player that has both outputs. If possible, get a player with decoder built-in.

I am not sure with your lg model but I have a 5922p which has the karaoke function. Anyway, mine does not like s/vcd that has been ripped from dvd.
