Don't you miss those great stories with believable characters? People like you and me, instead of a bunch of too young gym freaks?
Remember when movies were for real and not a bunch of remakes and sequels?

I was just reading the comments about Van Helsing in another thread and was thinking that lately some of the "big movies" seem to have lost their impact somewhere.
The one that really stood out was League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
I'm not sure what the problem was exactly but it just seemed to fall flat. The story was potentially good, the effects were OK, but it just didn't work. Maybe there were too many "main" characters and the focus was lost.
Then came Underworld, which was better but I still don't think reached its full potential.
Now I'm reading that Van Helsing is not really as good as we were hoping.
Maybe the special effects are taking over and killing good movies.

Yeah there are too many special effects these days, and unfortunately the effects sell a movie, but lovers of true film sadly are left with a hollow feeling more often than not.
Unfortunately I don't see Hollywood cinema going back away from this, so we are in for some average films, with only the odd excellent one coming from the main stream mecca.

Well, movies should be about story telling and effects should be an aid, a mean to achieve a goal and not the goal in itself.
The other thing is the CG deal. All those computer effect look great. They look so great that producers push writers and directors to use them instead of live action. (Not to mention that they are cheaper than real action...) The problem is that, because they are there and they have no limit, they are being used and abused. But our mind knows when something is just not possible. When we see a carriage with horse flying over a clift, we know that's a trick. We get fascinated by how realistic it looks, but still... we know it's darn cartoon. And if I want to see cartoons... I watch cartoon network.

some movies and cgi go hand in hand, but l like a lot of simple type movies like The Castle and Malcom that just tell a good yarn :)

Some CGI seems to work well and then sometimes it doesn't.
I saw a trailer for Troy the other day and admittedly it was on a smallish tv and I wasn't really paying that much attention, but there was a shot of an armada of ships which gradually panned out to show thousands of boats and it looked very fake.
Maybe it won't look so bad in the actual movie, but the brief glimpse I got didn't look good.
Obviously something like that can't be done in reality, but why try to show it at all if it's not going to look convincing.

I agree. Movies these days rely too much on special effects/cgi and as technology improves everyday, this will only continue even more. I'm a huge fan of the old style where the less cgi used, the better and more realistic a film looked. Especially in action movies.

I'm pretty sure it stands for Computer Generated Imagery, and it's just that. Images made on the studio pc's and inserted into the picture, to either substitute for using real objects or creature that would cost to much, or would just be impossible to do otherwise.
Was good to begin with, but really has made the studio's lazy over the years. :(
