View Full Version : Loewe Calida 68/72cm price?

What price should I be able to haggle a salesman down to for one of these
Loewe Calida 100hz 4:3 68cm TV's? I think the RRP is around $2000, but I
believe Loewe in Australia is running 4:3 TV's out so they should be
cheaper? Anyone have any ideas on how low they should go? One of these
should make a good general purpose TV for a regional area where there is
limited digital service and analogue is likely to exist beyond 2008.

TCB

I'd say don't get a 4:3 set, unless it does that snappy widescreen squeeze
thingy.

Grundigs are as good as Loewes. Check ebay if you want a bargain.

That's unlikely to be true for very long at all now.

Sure, but you may well notice the warts in the
analog image with a new decent performance TV.

I know I do.

Encel in Melb sell the 68cm Loewe Arcada for $1699 (clearance price with no
haggling) which retails for $2500 and is a better model than the Calida. I
have an Arcada and it is a beautiful TV if you only want SD 4:3.

$2000.

Why pay so much for a 68cm 4:3 set ?

There are fantastic flat screen Jap sets for about $800, reasonable
sets for $600, crap ones for $400 and pathetic Chinese rubbish for
$300.

Even if you buy into the "Euro superior TV" bullshit, paying three or
four times as much is madness.

Mono.. not even stereo sound. No attempt to clean up the image. No
internal digital filtering and cleaning up of the image...

And a ess-than-wonderful picture tube.

Do a side-by-side comparison.

Sure, there's expensive crap. But not everything that costs more
than chepa crap is a waste of money.

Where have you been looking for TV's ?

Most of the $500+ TV's are Stereo. The top ones have digital filters
etc.

Loewe may or may not have fancier digital stuff but their pictures are
still wishy washy euro rubbish. And all their 4:3 TV's are not flat.

Anyway Loewe can't compete so they are gettingout of CRT production
this year.

Spending $2000 when $800 gets you better quality is madness.

It seems to me like you've not actually _seen_ the screens so
there's no point with arguing against your prejudices.

Yes I have.

Their pictures have a warm fuzzy look that fans say is more realistic.
What crap.

Australians are used to harsh sunshine and bright colours. I much much
prefer the Jap flat screens.

Even the Phillips Plasmas are known for this warm fuzzy look.

Most people hate it.

You pay the money , you make the choice. I prefer the European sets , I feel
they have a more natural look,If you prefer the over-hyped , over-etched
products from Sony et al that's fine.If you go into most peoples homes you
will find they have the colour ramped up to a rediculous level , doesn't
mean that it's correct, just what the uninformed prefer.
Most Asian flat screens have problems with the geometric accuracy of the
displayed image and this was one of the reasons the Loewe held back on
putting them into production.
One last point most know how bad Sony's service is ,the importers and
retailers of Loewe generally offer excellent after sales service and tech
support.

Sounds a bit elitist (and wrong)

Probably much more to do with the fact that Loewe are a very small
assembler of TV's. They do no make any major components themselves.
The only tubes available to them were probably the crap Philips ones
that are probably very pricey.

I think they found it difficult to add value over a normal Philips TV.

They need to as they do not even offer southern hemisphere tubes.
