Hi all,

i am finally getting a complete home theatre setup and need to decide on some speakers, my budget is about 2500-3000 for amp and speakers. I have looked at a few setups and today listened to a set of Paradigms from their Performance series.

4 x Atoms, cc-170 centre with a Wintel sub...... using a Denon 1604... now this sounded just fine.... however we changed the front to Phantoms and it sounded so much better... I was told 3000 would get me the lot including cables

does anyone own Paradigms and could comment on their performance... or have any advice re the Denon 1604....

I was previously thinking of some Jensens from JB, however didn't get a chance to listen, the shop was also very busy so i felt this would not give them a chance... will be going back during the week while it is quieter...

any other advice on alternate systems would be good.

thanx in advance

Paradigm speakers have a good reputation for sound quality. Avoid the Jensens as they are pretty cheap and nasty. Some of their models use a titanium tweeter which sounds alright in theory but results in a harsh top end in practice.

Take a look at comments here: http://www.audioreview.com/

I used to run Paradigms and thought they were pretty good. Until I changed
to JBL's.... And Def Tech's sound even better.

I run a Yamaha DSP-A1.

I liked the atoms and they are pretty cheep too. I've seen these in the
paper here in Syd for around 300 bucks a pair (caringbah hifi)

Best 300 dollars I've heard yet anyways.

Good luck.

I'd get a better sub if I were you. Ditch it and get it later.

thanks for the advice, I'll be going into another store and listening to some B&Ws and other stock can always fall back on the Paradigms if I can't find better in my price range.... thinking i will get 3-way fronts and skimp on the sub for now... will save and get a 12" later on... or might do a speaker kit Sub.

I have big B&W floorstanders (DM220s - about 15-20 years old) and no sub - connected to a Harmon Kardon AVR4550 (also B&W centre and rears) - The system absolutely rocks, although I do have to have the bass turned slightly up on the amp to get a decent rumble going... Was watching this awful movie "XXX" with Vin Diesel last night - in the avalanche scene, my house was seriously shaking so I hate to think what would happen if I did add a big sub....!

So I think your idea of missing out the sub and going for bigger fronts will be fine...
