Possibly the best horror film ever made, this brilliant adaptation of Ira Levin's best-selling novel is the story of a loving New York City couple who are expecting their first child. Like most first-time mothers, Rosemary (Mia Farrow) experiences confusion and fear. Her husband (John Cassavetes), an ambitious but unsuccessful actor, makes a pact with the devil that promises to send his career skyward. Director Roman Polanski elicits uniformly extraordinary performances from the all-star cast. Ruth Gordon won an Oscar for her performance as an oversolicitous next-door neighbor in this classic chiller.

AUDIO/VISUAL

Rosemary's Baby has a Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono soundtrack, and it actually comes across very well which was a pleasant surprise. Yeah, it's Mono but it comes through pretty clear and well suited to the screen. Speech is mostly in sync, but I did notice a couple of moments that seemed to be dubbed later.
The surround speakers are given some time off during this movie, but the overall quality of audio track could be described as authentic and very satisfactory despite it being Mono.

Presented with an aspect of 1.85:1 and 16:9 enhanced, I was again surprised as the transfer quality was better than expected. I was ready to be faced with all kinds of marks and blemishes, but was instead watching a 1968 movie that has held up well and doesn't look too bad at all on DVD.
It's a mostly clean picture with only very minor marks that aren't worth worrying about.
Fine grain does show up, especially in some of the darker scenes, but again it's not really worth worrying about.
Colours are hardly stunning, but have a slightly dull, but natural look to them and I though that this quality added the feel of this classic 1968 horror film.
Overall, the visual quality of this DVD gets the thumbs up.

EXTRA FEATURES

Making Of -
This feature runs for about 22:06 minutes and is in full screen.
The making of feature looks very dated and was obviously done around the same time the movie was made. It's a mix of scenes from the movie and footage of filming and focuses a lot on Roman Polanski and Mia Farrow.

Retrospective interviews with Roman Polanski, Robert Evans & Richard Sylbert. -
This feature runs for about 16:15 and is shown in full screen.
Here, the three men talk separately about various issues such as deciding to do the film, and how Roman Polanski had imagined the character of Rosemary differently at the start of filming and actually wanted Tuesday Weld to play Rosemary.

OVERALL

Well there's no doubt that Rosemary's Baby is a classic horror film and is arguably one of the best to date. It has such an evil and engrossing story and some solid performances by the cast. Mia Farrow is superb as Rosemary and Ruth Gordon also stands out with her very unique and memorable on screen presence. Rosemary's baby looks and feels very much like a movie from the late 1960's, but Roman Polanski and the cast have done such a fine job with this movie, it's easy to see why it has held up so well over time.
Fans are thankfully treated to a DVD that has some pleasing audio/visual content and will not be disappointed. Fans should own this DVD and I really do recommend that it be hired by anyone that has even the most remote interest in "spooky" movies.
