finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a 70 - 200 F4 Lens locally.
First large specialist photosuplier, conversation with counter jumper -
thinking of either a 70 to 200 or the new 28 to 300 L series, have you
either. Yes, we have the 70 to 200. Haven't heard of canon making a 28 to
300. Mmm, got a price on the 70 and moved on to next shop, once again a
specialist camera retailer. Whilst waiting at counter, next to one guy
behind the counter who seemed to be staring into oblivion, more senior staff
members enquires "are you being served?" glances in my direction and walks
off before I can reply. Guy behind counter says Oh, sorry how can I help
you. Start discussing with him around some software they had for digital
file management prior to getting on to the lens when a further staff member
comes up an indicates he was wanted on the phone, without a by your leave
ignores me and takes the phone call. I stand there expecting him to return
to me. Just as he hangs up a further couple of customers come into shop
that he appears to have been dealing with earlier and say to him we've got
the money, so further once again without a word to me, he says to them, "now
I just have to find your camera" and marches off leaving me standing at the
counter. By this time I am really pissed so leave shop. They have just
lost a customer for life who was intending to spend around $1500 today and
god knows how much in the future. Finally trek down to 3 rd shop who I will
name, "photographic wholesalers". Welcomed by staff there and even though
its busy and I have to wait as all staff busy, at least one staff members
says to me, be with you in a minute. Get served by a knowledgeable chap who
not only knows about the 29 to 300 but has one in shop, long discussion on
pros and cons and I settle for the 70 to 200. I have no links to the latter
shop and have in the past "shared my custom" around (excess of $13,000 in
last two years). Two shops that really blew it through bad customer
management. No wonder so many retailers are going down the gurgler and
people are buying on the net. Hope your experiences are better.
