View Full Version : Harman Kardon speaker delay
Hi all,
I've looked through some of the manuals for HK home theater receivers and
the receivers do not seem to have speaker delay settings for DTS sources. Is
there a reason why the speaker delay cannot be set in HK receivers for DTS
sources?
Regards,
Nige

I own an HK amp - AVR4550 I think. Do you own one yourself, or are you just going by the manuals? I was under the impression that the speaker delay is set for all sources in one go, and not separately for dolby and DTS. Let me know if you want me to check for you...

delay is only avaliable in pro logic, i have a denon amp and i can't set the delay for dolby digital or dts. The only thing you can do is set the distance that the speakers are to the listening position, and the amount of db you want to put in.

setting the distance that the speakers are away from the listening position is just another way of setting the delay - it's actually a much easier way of doing it as it means that your amp does all the maths for you.
Otherwise, there are various formulae you can use, such as setting the delay to be 1ms for each metre the speakers are away from you, in relation to each other - or something....

Sorry for the confusion...that is what I meant by delay. It is represented
by speaker distance settings for some receivers.

Hi there,
I was looking at the AVR 5550 manuals and its states that the DTS delay
times are not "adjustable" but I am not sure if the speaker delays under
Dolby Digital are applied to DTS sources. If can you clarify this it would
be great.

I looked on my HK AVR4500 last night, and yes you are correct, I can only set the delay for Dolby Digital and not for DTS. Whether this is specific to the HK or a general limitation of DTS, I don't know...!
