According to ezydvd there's a Hichcock collection price drop coming on the 22nd January- http://www.ezydvd.com.au/hitchcock.zml
I assume that means these cheaper prices will turn up at retail stores soon after. I plan to rock up to my local Big W and grab a few titles I've neglected to get.
Anyone even remotely into great films should at least pick up Rear Window and Vertigo.
Keep away from 'The Birds'. The R1 is anamorphic, the R4 is cropped 4:3
Wish they'd hurry up and release the remaining Hitchcock films.
Criterion has done a superb job with some of his movies from the 40's. You still can't get 'Suspicion' or 'Dial M for Murder' -in any region. They're not his best films of course (Vertigo, Rear Window, Notorious and Psycho are his best films btw**) but I love 'em ... faults and all.
** - dont argue, I'm right :D

I just read a review. Apparently Marnie (R4) is missing an anamorphic transfer as well. The R1 is 16:9 but its more than $17 AUD. Still, why compromise if you don't have to?
I might be picking up a few of those:
Saboteur
Rear Window
Rope
Shadow of a Doubt
Torn Curtain
Vertigo
and maybe
Birds and Psycho (but i have to read a few reviews first regarding their transfers...)

Well I already have Psycho. I too read the review at MichaelsR4 but somehow I don't have a problem with the transfer. I also don't notice any audio sync problem early on. Buy it!! For $16.95 its worth the risk.
I'm thinking of getting Shadow of a Doubt. But maybe I won't. I already have 7 Hitchcock films, and though SoaD is pretty good, it's not one of his best (regardless of whether it's his favourite or not).
I haven't bought "the birds" and don't plan to. However, if I did I'd definately get the R1. Cropped 4:3 is never an option IMO I'm sure you can find it cheap if you hunt around
I really liked this one, i enjoy movies shot in those peaceful typical American small-towns :)

So you reckon it's better to wait for B&M stores to get those titles in...mmm...they might be cheaper but will they have stock?
I need to make a decision before the 22nd...

I don't think it's a big deal. There's not going to be a huge saving either way. Just buy it online if you know wjhat you want.
BTW 'Strangers on a Train' is available in shops for around $20.

i bought Marnie R1 and wish that i hadnt, it cost me $44 aud, i guess i did not know about the cheaper sites at the time because there is no way i would pay that much for any disk now except something like a Criterion etc.
Anyway despite some good reviews i found the picture quality pretty bad, probably because of being spoilt by the remastering of Vertigo looking so glorious. For that price i would recommend the R4 over R1 unless of course you just cannot bear watching something in full frame.

Well if the R1 looks as nasty as you say, i can''t argue with your logic.

The picture is quite good, particularly for people with a widescreen/anamorphic display device, although has a bit of grain and damage to the original print - but remember, the Marnie print wasn't restored like Vertigo was. Check out the doco on Vertigo to see the difference in the unrestored print to the end result and to see what was involved in the restoration! I'm probably a bit biased with a widescreen projector, so I'll go the widescreen version even though its more expensive now.
The doco provided is still good, although I would have liked a commentary like on Vertigo.
Still good spot for these - quite a bargain at the price, and I would recommend it if you haven't seen it (Marnie) for this price!
Btw: Just spotted them for $15.99 at FBO :)
