Was a great show. I think he's one of the most fascinating artists whose
work I've encountered. He's dirty and gritty, and obsessive, which will make
you a target for critics, but is what is needed to be a great artist.

If you haven't already, try and get a look at his book 'Tulsa' - it's a
series of incredible photos in the vein of 'Kids' but several decades
earlier.

Yes it was good.....I liked hearing John Waters saying he liked BULLY. This
is one of my fave movies from the last five years.

Scorsese is a great artist. Clark merely has a good eye for what will
get him the attention he so desperately craves.

yeah, from this doco, Larry states that Tulsa is a complete compilation of
all the pictures he has taken. sounds like a big book.

Every artist wants attention, whether they say so or not. Even Scorcese.
Futhermore, attention-seeking is a basic human trait, not just an artistic
one.

Quite what the fuck Scorsese has to do with anything , I'm not sure, but yes
i agree wth you, he is a great artist.

Like all artists, Clark has work which is flawed, just like Scorcsese has
The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun and Gangs of New York to his name. I
was a fan of Larry Clark's work long before Kids came out, so i will
probably always think of him as a photographer first and a film-maker
second.

The previous poster compared this hack and borderline pedo to a 'great
artist'. I was just pointing out the ridiculous nature of the assertion
by referring to an actual, great artist.

I'm not sure on the details or validity of this, but I gather Larry is about
to do or has done a remake of one of Scorcsese's movies., hence the
comparison between them. in the doco a few famous people stated that they
admired Clark, I think Scorcsese was one of them.

Just curious: what do you think of photographer David Hamilton?

IMHO Hamilton's work lacks a certain 'edge' that makes it distinct - Bill
Henson takes a similar subject matter (or did, it was many years ago) and
makes it cold and clinical, there's something completey unnerving about his
young nudes. I don't really know how to put it, but I find most of
Hamilton's work quite dull.

As a sideissue on the same topic why has SBS sudenly gone from
'multicultural' broadcaster to sexual freakshow of the week channel? Why so
many documentaries and/or programs on primetime regarding gay/lesbian/gimp
etc... sexuality? If I'm paying taxes to watch a trendy version of the Jerry
Springer channel, well I'd rather not frankly.

BTW to mention Larry Clark and Scorsese in the same sentence is a joke
whichever way you look at it.

Fair enough. I'm not a photography fanatic really - just wondered how you
thought about different photographers approaching the same / similar subject
matter.

True. I haven't even thought about Hamilton for many years... but what I do
remember about his work is much the same as your opinion.

It's flawed. Willem Dafoe is abysmally bad in it. It's a valliant attempt.

Gangs of New York was abysmal, a two hour plus visual wankfest without a
single moment of class or film-making genius that we've come to expect from
ol' Marty. Pretention to a new level and two absolutely awful performances
from male and female leads.

Temptation wasn't bad but it was seriously flawed, and Kundun was just a
fucking snore-fest. Seriously, I don't like it when people complain of films
as being 'boring', but man, that stinker took the iced baked desert as a
film to be comotased to. Embarassingly bad. Ugh.

Of course, that's just MHO :) My point is really that every artist with a
catalogue of work ranging over a lengthy period of time will have their
good/crap stuff, and I don't think Larry Clark is any different - I don't
think he's made a bad film yet though, but some of his later 80's stuff was
way off the mark i thought.

Cal

The exception here could be Joel Peter Witkin....I don't think the man is
capable of taking a bad photograph....
