How does this switchable 16:9 mode work?

I cant find any information on it on the Net.

Is it a new feature on recent 68cm 4:3 televisions?

I suppose it depends on the brand. I suggest you check your TV manual to see
if such a feature exists. If you mean that you want to check out new 4:3 TVs
then you should ask about it at the store.

I assume it allows the viewer to eliminate the black bars on the screen when viewing 16:9 DVD's,and saves buying a widescreenTV for now.

All it does is reduce the v-height. Not many TVs do it, and most don't
do it very well. These days, it's more recommendable to get a widescreen TV.

When you switch to 16:9 mode, the TV squishes the focus of the 576
horizontal lines into the 16:9 area, so you can watch an anamorphic DVD
without losing any resolution. On normal TVs you lose almost half your
screen resolution to the black bars when watching widescreen content.

Some, not all.

On my Grundig, you select from a menu that has

Automatic format
Format 4:3
Format 14:9 zoom
Format 16:9
Panorama zoom
Cinema zoom

The automatic is so good that I dont use anything else.

It basically fills the 16:9 physical screen with image, without producing
any visible bad effect with stuff thats broadcast in 4:3 format.

You can see that the circle in the test pattern isnt perfectly round,
but thats it. You dont notice it on normal material at all, say on the
faces or the full lenght images of people. If you quickly flick between
say 4:3 and 16:9 you can see a difference, but both look fine.

And you dont lose stuff off the edges either except with the last two zooms.

Yeah, I couldnt find much useful, even on the Grudig site before buying it.

On widescreen TVs, actually.

No Rod, he's talking about something that 4:3 sets have that WS sets don't
actually need.

Same with my Loewe Profil (68cm 4:3 set). It makes it mighty useful now
with digital, swapping the Topfield STB between fullscreen with 4:3 centre
extract, and 16:9 for full widescreen resolution images (given the big mix
of 4:3pillarbox and 16:9 now).
When I asked various salesmen about it back then (actually about 1998), none
had any idea, it was shocking how little salesdroids know about their
products. I ended up choosing the Loewe because the quality was so good
and I knew it had the SCART triggered WidescreenSwitching mode (and it
switches on VBI in the SVID/composite if you don't have a SCART STB/DVD
player too), and knew it would come in handy for DVDs and the new Aussie DTV
standard being spoken about back then.

I wish my Phillips did. It has a ton of RCA sockets but not a single SCART.
