Hi everyone,
Just wondering if any of you clever ppl can help me out with a little problem i am having with SVCD movies on my Sony DS-305.
The problem is that i can't play em! I stick a SVCD disk into the player and it say's that it 'cannot play this disk'
Is there a special format i need to burn these disk in? Plz note I'm burning them from pre-generated .cue/.bin files and have had no hand in the encoding process, however I can extract the files and re-encode them (is that a word?) if that's what it takes...
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! :)

hi,
The sony website states the following:
Colour: Silver DVD Player
Disc compatibility: DVD Video & Video CD, DVD+RW & DVD-R/RW (Video Mode), CDR,CDRW, MP3
Laser type: Red
see how it says Video CD, no mention of SVCD. However www.vcdhelp.com mentions it does play them.
go here: http://www.vcdhelp.com/svcd
There is some test files you can download with instructions on what to do.
there is also another link given, to rewrite the headers in VCD (I think):
http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick
P.S Yes re-encode is a word, well at least I think it is and I beleive people will know what you mean if you use it.
Good luck and let us know the outcome.
thanks

I have the same player and it plays the few svcd that I have.
Does Have trouble with xvcd if the bitrate is set too high.

sweet, thanks very much mate!
I had a good look at the VCDEasy site and will give the header trick a go, although many ppl say a firmware upgrade may(?) also solve the problem...
do you know how it can be done and the tools i need to do it? (point me to a website and i'll do the work, i don't expect you to write a 3 page post telling me how!;) )

This is like the blind leading the blind but I'll give it a go....
My first plan of action would be to put the SVCD in the PC drive and extract the mpeg using VCDeasy (see tools >svcd build/rip).
Once I had the mpeg I'd then use VCDeasy to author my own SVCD. How would this help? No idea. All I know is VCDeasy v1.1.1 has no compatibility probs with sony 305. With the mpeg extracted you can more easily mess around with it. Rename it, whatever. vcdhelp.com is a good place to get help

ya, had a look at the VCD program, looks pretty easy too.....but call me lazy and stuff but i could really like to upgrade the firmware so that it'll play em without me having to change the encoding (yeah i know it only takes 5 mins)
is there any ways to do this without spending hundreds on a device to do it?

No idea. But don't be surprised if a firmware upgrade does nothing. Cause my 305 plays svcd and I bought it early last year. No firmware upgrade required:D
VCD easy is called VCDeasy for a reason you know. Lot better than theie previous product, VCDIncrediblydifficult. Its free too
