View Full Version : Pioneer dual layer burner

My A04 is getting a bit long in the tooth.

Does anybody know when Pioneer will release their dual-layer DVD burner?

I'm surprised they've allowed themselves to be beaten to the punch by
Hitachi.

And hopefully Pioneer will swallow their pride and include DVD-RAM write
support.

It's an excellent format for data backup (though I recognise that the vast
majority of people buy DVD burners to copy movies.

Come on Pioneer !

Cheers

I think pioneer is waiting for dual layer dvd-dl minus would obviously be
more resonably priced and have a higher compatability with older drives. and
they will probably also be both + and - Dual layer supported as well which
would be also more beneficial. Its better not to rush there developement. Id
rather wait a bit to see which one is most reliable and all problems if any
get ironed out.

I am busting for the Pioneer too and have -R9 which should be more
compatible with older players. maybe there is stil a remote chance of the
A07 being able to do dual layer :-). I have only heard end of this year
before it is released.

I have the Sony DRU700A Dual layer. I am sure many people would tell you
to hold off. I guess I would say the same unless you are happy to pay the
extra
now rather than wait, wait, wait and you are young and can afford it :-)

BTW, for data backup, use only plus (+R/RW) media, they are designed for
data backup.

Did yours come with a DVD+R9 blank to try dual layer out?

The AO8 is supposedly due in October or November later this year, for AO7
owners like myself, don't hold your breath about the firmware upgrade to DL
because it isn't going to happen.

Pioneer DVR-108/A08 models due out later this year.
DVD-R 4X 8.5Gb Dual Layer Drive. Might even be DVD-R/+R 16X by then
but don't expect to see any Dual Layer 8.5Gb media until the DVD Forum
clears the drives and then the media.

LG 4120B 12X Dual Layer DVD burners are out but again no DVD+R 2.4X
8.5Gb or DVD+R 12X media to use in these DVD Burners. No real point in
buying these until the media comes out for the drives by which time
these drives will be a lot cheaper than what they currently are.

I would rate the LG DVD 4082B drives and higher as a better drive than
the Pioneers these days. The ability to write to DVD-RAM media is
leaps amd bounds ahead of the DVD-RW/+RW format.

LG Suppliers now are more likely just to focus on the LG 4120B models.
The LG 4082B are likely to disappear come July. It is all moving at a
very fast pace and the poor media makers can not keep pace with
hardware advances.

I am getting samples of DVD+R 2.4X 8.5Gb sample media in soon.
I am giving these to a few of my regulars for free. If these go well
then I will be ordering these in spindles of 50.

No but I will get a press release at some stage.
Dual Layer DVD+R 8.5Gb is done by the DVD+RW group where DVD-R Dual
Layer 8.5Gb is done by the DVD Forum.

I don't expect we will see a Dual Layer 8.5Gb DVD-R 4X until early to
mid 2005. Just look at the delays in DVD-R 8X media since the Pioneer
107D drives first came out way back in January. The specs of these
were past in I think December. Some makers have very small numbers of
DVD-R 8X but they are not exactly cheap.

I will be selling DVD+R 2.4X Dual Layer media to those who want it but
I feel I will more likely use Dual Layer DVD-R 4X. Mainly because my
main DVD player can't see DVD+R media at all so don't give it any
chance of seeing a DVD+R Dual Layer disc.

Anything from $10 to $20. It is not cheap. Anything new is often
expensive but give it time.

I do think when people see the price of the Dual Layer media they will
think twice about buying it.

I know of at least 3 brand names that will have a Dual Layer DVD+R
2.4X 8.5Gb disc out some time in the next few months. Often release
dates get pushed back on such things.

Currently DVD+R 2.4X 8.5Gb media is in the testing faze.
When I get samples of these in I will no doubt have to buy a LG 4120B
drive to test them out to see if they are reliable before ordering
them in.

No. Unfortunately. And, believe it or not I have not even tried 8x on it.
Just updated its firmware to
offical VVY05, cannot tell any differences yet.

the lack of media is frustrating and it will go like hot cakes when it does

Interesting. I wouldn't mind betting the early media will go fairly quickly
so people can give it a go but at that price, that it won't sell a lot
after initial interest until more than just Verbatim make it and the cheapy
brands come out

It is a very exciting time at the moment. So many different rival
formats that are on the way. Just a real pity that all these makers
don't get together and nut out a single format and go from there.

This is the way I see it panning out over the next two years.
DVD+R 2.4X drives that are now out. We will see a delay of a few
months for DVD+R 2.4X media but before these come out I would expect
to see a DL DVD+R 4X disc and drives to follow. Then a few months
later the Pioneer DL DVD-R 4X. Then inside a month or so the first DL
drives that do DVD+R/-R 8.5Gb. And then the rush will be on for young
and old.

And some time next year Blue Laser Drives coming out along with Blu
Ray. They will first make the money on the DL drives and then move up
to what they should have done by now in Blu Ray or Blue Laser. Japan
is leading the world in Blu Ray second generation 50Gb recorders in
the Panasonic DMR range. The US is going to have these recorders in
the third quarter of this year and with any luck we'll see these in
quarter 4 of this year. Then maybe the DVD burners will catch up to
these recorders.

Meanwhile there is a 100gb small disc on the way that could see all
the above disappear.

I have no doubt that sooner or later movies will all be on small CF
size memory cards and that these will connect up to a palm size device
that connects up to the TV set. Just a matter of time.

Technology is moving at a very fast pace. Impossible to know what os
likely to happen in the next 2 to 5 years.

The movie industry will try theor hardest to keep us on the current
DVD format but with HD video there is a need to store it on much
larger capacity media.

A fantastic time to be alive and watching to see what is going to
happen in the next several months.

Now just a waiting game until all these new toys come out.
