- Danny Peary, GUIDE FOR THE FILM FANATIC.
<i>As The Outlaw Jose Wales, two-time Academy Award winner, Clint Eastwood is ideally cast as a hard-hitting, fast-drawing loner, recalling his "Man with no name" from his European westerns.
But unlike that other mythic outlaw, Jose Wales has a name - and a heart.
After avenging his family's brutal murder, Wales is on the lam, pursued by a pack of killers. He travels alone, but a ragtag group of outcasts (including Sondra Locke and Chief Dan George) is drawn to him - and Wales can't leave his motley surrogate family unprotected. Eastwood's skill before and behind the camera connected with audiences for its humour and tenderness as well as its hair-trigger action.</i>
<b>Audio/Visual…</b>
"The Outlaw Jose Wales" is presented in an aspect of 2.35:1 and is 16:9 enhanced.
The first thing that struck me about this movie is the quality of the transfer. This movie was made in 1976 and it looks great on DVD some 25 years later.
The picture has a mostly bright, clear and sharp image all the way through and presents itself well with plenty of fine detail. I thought that the picture was mostly clean and free from degradation, blemishes and marks but some scenes such as the 3:30 mark in chapter 2, have a quick burst of dark lines and marks, but thankfully this only lasts a few seconds and problems like this are not very common in this movie and isn't a distraction.
Colours also look very good for a movie of this age and although the scenery has a lot of light browns, greys and browny looking greens, there are some parts of the movie that display a nice array of colours that really do make this look great for its age.
The layer change happens between scenes in chapter 18 and you are too busy having a bit of a chuckle to be bothered by it.
I guess the next thing that struck me about this DVD version of the movie is the audio.
The Dolby Digital 5.1 mix is just superb and really has a lot to offer.
The front sound stage is very strong and well suited to the screen which includes some directional sound and some thumping bass. The sub is heavily used at times and really rumbles to masses of horse hooves, heavy action including gunfire etc....
The rears offer plenty of atmosphere and especially in the first half of the movie, there are always crickets or birds making noise behind you. The rears also offer good support to the front of the room by helping to immerse you in the music, gunfights and even thunder and rain .
Speech is very clear and in sync.
<B>Extra features…..</b>
<I><U>Cast and Crew.</U></I>- Is what you'd expect from this feature, with a list of the major cast and crew and includes a credit to the book.
<I><U>Trailer - </U></I> Shown in widescreen and in Dolby Digital 1.0
<I><U> Special introduction by Clint Eastwood </U></I>- Full screen runs for about 40 seconds.
<I><U>"Eastwood In Action".</U></I>- Mostly features Clint Eastwood talking about his role in making the film and has bits of behind the scenes footage. Full screen and runs just short of 8 minutes.
<U><I>"Hell Hath No Fury: The making of The Outlaw Jose Wales".</U></I>- Very enjoyable "making of" that has interesting interviews with various cast members many years later and it looks more at the story of Jose Wales. This is a more modern (late 90's) documentary and is just about all in widescreen. It runs for about 29 minutes.
<B>Overall......</b>
The Outlaw Jose Wales is a classic western that is well acted and directed by Clint Eastwood.
This is easily one of my favourite Clint Eastwood movies and I was pretty happy about getting to review it on DVD (Thanks to the nice people at Warner Home Video).
This DVD didn't disappoint as it has a couple of pleasant surprises.
The audio and video quality is a lot better than I expected for a 25 year old movie and it has helped make this awesome movie so much more enjoyable to watch.
I would have given my right arm to watch this with an audio commentary by Clint Eastwood, but you can't have everything and the extra features are very informative anyway.
The extra features provided give a good insight into the movie, the character and Clint Eastwood's role in making it and the <I>"Hell Hath No Fury: The making of The Outlaw Jose Wales"</I> feature was particularly entertaining with cast members talking about their roles and the movie many years later.
This is a very good DVD overall and I highly recommend it.
Thanks for reading…
