Anyone out there have any opinions on the Sony Wega RPTVa. Does anyone
know what the actual screen resolution is capable of? The glossy
brochures are a bit vague on this point.

www.sony.com.au has all the details under
Products / Home Entertainment / Television & Display
then select appropriate TV category ( Plasma WEGA or LCD WEGA)
then select specific TV from menu on right.

Looked there already and it doesn't really tell me squat.
There's the usual stuff about HD inputs but what I'm interested to know
IS WHAT IT ACTUALLY DISPLAYS!
More importantly I'd like to hear any opinions/experiences people may or
may not have had with these units too. Rather than the usual sales spiel.

If you know the actual model number, they might be a manual for it
available at
http://www.sonydigital-link.com/manuals/manuals.asp
The specs section should give you all the details you need.
It mystifies me why Sony is so coy about letting people see the full specs
of their products on their bloated, flash-infested Australian web site...

You noticed that too.... the flash-infestation I can cope with but when
it starts playing the sound track from that stupid ad they're currently
running then it goes a bit too far.... give me the Marketing Division of
the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation anyday....
Share and enjoy...

Did you click on the "Specs" tab for each TV model?
It seems to clearly say under "Picture Performance",
"Resolution (pixels): 852 x 1024"
etc
?

Must be so clear that it transparent and I'm looking right through it.
All I see is the following:

Please point out the part that tells me the resolution this unit is
capable of displaying. And what exactly does "Picture Definition: High"
mean anyway (screen is higher of the ground...)
After looking at one again today next to one of their "Super Fine Pitch"
CRT's I'm pretty sure it's not real HD away, looking like a choice
between picture size or picture quality, but that was probably always
going to be the case.

I've had three Sony Wega TVs in the past 4 years and, frankly, this is NOT
the brand it used to be.
Apart from the bloated price you always pay for the "Sony" brand, I've been
pretty disappointed on the technical side.
The CRT TVs were poorly adjusted - out of the box with considerable
straight-line distortion on the RHS of the screen. Reliability on one of
the sets was poor - it's been to the repair shop 3 times. Service at the
repair shop has been slow.
I don't know much about Sony Plasmas and I don't think there's a Sony LCD TV
on the market yet. Sony Plasmas are overpriced compared with the
competition. Bear in mind that Sony buys its Plasma displays from Samsung
anyway, so why pay more for a re-badged Samsung.
Sony is always behind with technical innovation and bells/whistles too.
IMHO, the brand to go for in TV these days is Samsung. Top product,
reasonable price and good service. LG is good for pricing but has a lousy
pixel warranty - buy from a dealer that happily accepts returns if pixels
are dead out-of-the-box.
Sharp is OK but expensive. Why doesn't Sharp have a computer input on its
LCD TVs, whereas just about every other brand does?
Philips is a re-badged LG with a higher price.

You will find that Sony spare parts are vastly overpriced, Someone once
said , "If it's got 4 letters in the name avoid it" they where right.
