I have been looking at these RPTV units and have previously asked for
opinions on both sets. There have been a lot of people looking at the
post but none replying, so I know there is a fair bit of interest.
I thought about the Toshiba RPTV'S but they are out of my price range.
I started out being biased towards the Panasonic model, based on what
people told me and also by having a less than happy experience with a
Sony 68cm TV years ago. But now I am not so sure.
I have tried to research the guts out of both these sets, there is not
a lot available on them apart from people rehashing the manufacturers
specs and of course opinions like what I am posting here. I have not
been able to find any reviews in magazines about these two sets
either.
After contacting Panasonic they told me that their model does not do
3:2 pull down for NTSC.
Some guy at Todds Hi-Fi Brisbane told me that 3:2 and Progressive scan
is the same thing - so much for product knowledge.
I compared both of these RPTV's at JB with my own source material
being TOTAL RECALL Special Edition 16:9 NTSC. The Sony IMHO appeared
to have better clarity when displaying reds and had an edge on the
clearer picture when I adjusted both sets with contrast, brightness
down as in accordance with DVD essentials set up disc. Watching these
sets on torch mode (full contrast) looks good but they won't last long
if you run them at these factory settings, and you may eventually get
CRT damage on static images.
When viewing non digital source material the Sony has a function
called DRC 1250 that does a good job of removing the unsightly lines
that show up on standard reception and VHS signals.
The Pana 119cm which only has 100hz and Prog Scan and is unable to
mask these visible and annoying horizontal lines.
The Sony also has standard Progressive scan and 100HZ.
I have further observed the Panasonic model have difficulty in
receiving a progressive scan signal from the DVD player. On two
different pana sets with different progressive scan DVD players I have
seen the image flicker intermittently. Even the salesman stated that
the Pana had problems with the progressive signal.
On the positives the Pana has a bigger screen with a matte finish so
it isn't like the Sony 116cm Mirror, but for me I can control the
ambient lighting so this is not too much of a concern.
I did notice in a separate post by Blud , who has a 119cm Pana, the
set is only manual convergance. I like to fiddle with this sort of
gear, but my wife doesn't so the Sony get the thumbs up with the
option of manual and auto convergance.
At the end of the day I been give prices for the sets as follows:
Panasonic TXP800HA delivered for $2800 cash $200 for extra 4years
warranty.
Sony KPFW46M31 delivered with extra 4year warranty for $3250
When I pick which set I want, I am sure I can do even better.
From what I have seen so far in the limited viewings I have had, the
Sony appears to have a better image than the Panasonic.
If anyone can show me differently please do so. I would like to make
this post as constructive as possible.
Also has anyone got better prices than what I have so far ?
