SD versus HD Plasma

I dont know anything about digital TV and am in the market for a new TV so apart from the higher quality picture when viewing HD broadcasts on free to air are there any other features that SD misses out on. Is there a noticeable difference when viewing Austar satellite or playing a DVD? Is Austar HD? Is a plasma panel suitable as an every day TV?
