Does anyone have any information on the Olympus C-725 currently on sale
at Myer for $479? It is not reviewed in Dpreview and is not listed at
www.olympus.com although there is a superseded model C-720.
I'm interested in how it stacks up against the Canon A75.

Better zoom capability. Olympus lens vs Canon Lens - both excellent grade
lenses. Olympus is a little more complicated to access the advanced
features, but not overly so - i guess it depends a bit on what you are used
to. Canon feels to me to be a little bit more ruggedly built, and of course
is a bit more compact than the Olympus. Personally, if faced with the
choice I'd go the olympus for it's better zoom - I doubt you'd notice any
other real difference between the cameras.
Finally - don't buy off Myer, buy it off someone who'll actually give you
decent service, who will let you have a play with the camera prior to
purchase so you can see and feel it in action. Even if the place is selling
it for slightly more, isn't it better to pay a little more for the camera to
take the opportunity to make sure it really is what you want?

C-725 is the C-720 with xD rather than CF. 3.2MP & 8x Optical Zoom.

Good point. But even dedicated camera suppliers are capable of
shooting themselves in the foot over this.
For example, a couple of mates of mine were recently shopping for
cameras and extras in our nearest relatively big smoke (the tourist
ghetto of Cairns) and started out at one of the "upstart" camera
joints (i.e. they haven't been there for the past 40 years :) but they
weren't allowed to "play" with the stock -- one bloke just wanted to
confirm that his existing lenses would work with the new gear.
The result? They headed over to the long term Cairns camera shop
where they spent the best part of $6000 between them.

Yes indeed. And providing decent service doesn't hurt the supplier
either! :-)

I live it when that happens. People think you aren't ready to spend money,
so they don't give you the service you need. You then walk out and blow a
load of cash somewhere else. It least it goes to the right people!

C-725 is the C-720 with xD rather than CF. 3.2MP & 8x Optical Zoom.
The C-720 actually uses Smart Media.
I suspect that Olympus had a lot of C-720s, and couldn't (or at least didn't think they could move them) with the obsolete Smart Media cards, so they redesigned them with xD Picture card.

The nicest thing is to then walk back into the first store with the full
bags from the 2nd and ask the original sales person for a skylight or UV
filter to suit the camera, put it on in the store and then walk out buying
only that !! The looks on the faces can be priceless !

have u purchased the camera yet? cos for that price with a little bit of bargaining, u could get a c740 which has 10x optical zoom - not sure if that makes adif for u or not.
(i think JB hifi had it for arnd that on sale)

I think you're right...... the C740 is a better bet, because the camera uses ED lens elements in the lens, which produces a much better image.

This camera and the Canon A70 are essentially children's toys. To
obtain true photo quality, you need to use a camera which has a sensor
that records pixels in 3 colours like colour film. The only sensor
capable of this is the Foveon. Only Sigma cameras currently use this
brilliant sensor. Explore the possibilities of the Sigma SD10. You
will be fucking amazed.

Too bad their lenses suck.

Next thing we know, you'll be telling them that if they don't buy their
8-year-old children $1400 cameras, their kids will be laughed at in
show-n-tell and beat up at recess, their dog will turn gay, and they'll
be struck by lightning next time they enter a Best Buy.
Get a life, mein freund.
BTW, on a side note. I entered an "Earth Day photography contest" here
in my home town, and one of the other entrants was in possession of your
idolized Sigma SD10 model. I have an A70. Interestingly enough, I won
the contest, and rich boy with his camera that costs more than my car
didn't even get mentioned on the website. (I really would love to back
that up with details, but I have this thing about giving out clues to my
location and identity where mentally unstable individuals like you might
find them.. enlightened self-interest at it's finest)
BTW have you even SEEN the amount of chromatic aberration in night
photos taken by an SD10? A Canon A300 could take better night photos
than that overcomplicated chunk of plastic.. when they make a camera
that brings out the potential of that high-tech sensor, then you'll have
something to brag about. Till then.. nyeah ;)
