Well I have finally amassed my home theatre system, I have all the
components ready to go, all now I have to do is purchase the cables for
everything.

I require:

3 x Component video
2 x optical audio

I have looked at Monster Cables and they seem quite good but i have no real
true knowlege of just how much of a difference they will make.

My system consists of:

Fujitsu 42' plasma
Panasonic HDTV set top box/reciever
LG crappy DVD player
Denon 3805
Krix front and rear speakers

Am I on the right track with the Monster cables to compliment the system?

Thanks for all input and suggestions/advice!

Chad.

Don't blow too much on cables dude. Particularly the optical - digital
is digital, it won't make any difference.

Before everyone else jumps in to your rescue - they are good, but hugely
overpriced. I think places only stock them because of the huge markup they
get.

Some 'decent' Dick Smith Harmony type cables would be fine. Just look for
something well insulated and without molded plugs.

I agree Dick Smith Harmony or Harmony gold is good enough, or cheaper still from JAYCAR.

I like monster cables. I puchased mine from the USA and it worked out a bit more then half price after shipping, customs fees and GST.

I purchased there Ultra Series THX 1000 cables (2 x component, 2 x s-video and 2 x optical). The component cables retail (at Harvey Norman) for $340 and I got them for $US99. After shipping, customs and GST, I puchased $1500 worth of cables for $800.

I will do the same for the specker cables and sub when the time comes.

Check out B&H, they ship to Oz :-

I got my cables quickly and I was very pleased with them.

Unfortunately the HiFi/Video/HT retailer industry has been infiltrated by people selling all kinds of super expensive interconnect cable products with claims of how exotic materials are needed to get the best performance etc. Most of which is totally untrue.

The worst area for this propaganda relates to speaker cable, where the only criteria worth considering is the resistance per unit length (the lower the better), which can generally be provided by decent low resistance power flex.

Professional techincal equipment has been around for years in the telecommunications industry using up to gigabyte/s coax cable interconnects and you WILL NOT see them using exotic stuff like monster cable. It is unnecessary. Please note that these installations in exchange buildings have hundreds if not thousands of these cables running long distances between floors etc.

You just need a reasonable grade of shielded cable and interconnect such as those mentioned above available from DSE/Jaycar etc.

As an electrical engineer working for a telco research laboratories in Melb I nearly choke on the bulldust being fed an unfortunate public by some players in this game.

thanks for that very informative post headplant.

I too questioned the neeed for these ultra expensive cables. I went to
Jaycar and bought 3 component and 2 optical audio cables for a grand total
of $120.00.

The HD picture I have now absolutely blows me away. I just couldnt justify
another $600.00+ for the cables, no way.

I did a similar thing.

It wasn't until I had the cables that I discovered I could not use component
video connection between my DGTEC2000A HD set-top-box and Hitachi 37inch HD
plasma. :(
