Hi all,
Just got a JVC plasma, and I'm having some problems connecting the Foxtel digital STB. I connected it originally via the std Foxtel supplied scart to composite cable, and the picture was pretty good, however I believe I can get better quality via a S-Video connection. When I connect via the Scart to S-Video cable I bought, I get no picture, I've checked both S-video inputs on the TV and its the same on both, I've also made sure I set the video output in the Foxtel box to S-video. Any suggestions/ideas.

You may have bought an S-video to SCART cable. They are directional. If you
can't get a SCART to S-video, then get a SCART/S-Video converter plug (with
an in/out switch) and a S-video to S-video cable.

Thanks for the quick response. The cable i bought is labelled "Scart Plug To 4 Pin SVHS Plug + 2 RCA Plugs". So I'm assuming its what i should have, please corect me if I'm wrong, I'm a newbie in this area. I also tried it on the old TV which had an S-video connection, same result, no picture, which lead me to think it was a Foxtel issue, or as you point out a cable issue.

An update, and a resolution
Rang the Foxtel technical service, they had no solution other than to try a better quality cable. They did mention that there had been reported issues of my problem with cheaper cables connecting to S-video, and that they are working on understanding the issue. Anyway I bought an X-stream Scart to S-video cable (on the gracious proviso from the store that if it didn't work, I could return it) and the problem is solved, clear, crisp picture. Obviously beware cheap conversion cables in this instance. Thanks flyinyereye for the assistance, pointed me in the right direction anyway.

As Flyerintheeye said, SCART is directional (especially svideo). You
probably just got an adapter for pumping svideo and audio into a SCART TV,
not vice-versa. That is why the best thing to buy for SCART conversion if
you only want audio and SVIDEO at most is one of those $15 adpaters with the
IN/OUT switch on them. IN for plugging into a SCART TV, OUT for plugging
into a STB.
There is a known problem with some of the Fox STBs having SVIDEO issues, the
other post you have here is probably the support person getting mixed up
about that problem, I believe your problem is that the cable is incorrect.
