I'm expanding this to include: aus.tv.digital

I'm considering buying the Pioneer. Not familiar with the Panasonic (but it's no use to me because it doesn't record in the DVD formats I want).

The DVD-310 brochure I have here clearly states "Variable Bit Rate Recording". The downloadable PDF manual (page 89) explains fully about the 32 selectable recording modes (which means VBR).

I'm sure both recorders use more or less the same system to achieve maximum quality.

P.S. This recorder is now on special at Harvey Norman for $799.

Go for the 510. You wont regret it.

Does the PIONEER DVR510 have PAL Progressive Scan?

I doubt this very much (but I may be wrong). On reading through my brochures it briefly mentions "2-3 Pull-Down Pure Cinema Progressive Scan" for "output in NTSC format", which I suspect will only be useful if you play NTSC DVD's. The detailed page of fine print with specifications has absolutely nothing.

I'm no longer bothering with the 310 or 510 - the replacement models are about to be released. If you hang on, the prices will fall even further. I'm going to buy a different brand with more versatility (for what i'm doing).
