I am having trouble with the sound via my stb (Mediastar HDT9000). It
drops out for a second or two but it happens so often that it makes it
impossible to watch.

Poor reception
bad antenna lead
weak signal
have you tried a set of rabbit ears, I know that it worked with me to help
find the culprit for sound dropouts. Just waiting for the money so I can get
a professional to put an external antenna.

I had an identical problem with my DVD player and Surround sound reciever.
It turned out to be a problem with the Optical Digital output of the player
seemed incompatible with my reciever. I changed the dvd player and all was
well.
Are you using Digital Optical connection ?
if not, then it maybe signal issues as mentioned by Reptar.

The sound does not travel through your video cables.

That's a very good point! What kind of an idiot am I!

Then I would be using standard a RCA cable for the sound.

I did have a guy in to install my external TV arial before I got the new
kit and he assured me I had a good signal and the cable was of high enough
standard for digital transmissions. I do not know about the cable from
the wall socket to the STB though. Could this be a problem?

Mark.
