Anyone know of a product that does this? I have a bunch of obscure VHS's
from the States that I would love to be able to transfer to DVD but I am
struggling to find info on any home-component type recorder that will do it.
Any info greatly appreciated

TIA

Steve

I just bought a Pioneer DVR-510H-S ($1600-$2000) and it *will* convert
NTSC to PAL DVD-V.

See page 95 of the owners manual.

Or a cheaper solution buy a Belkin F5U208 USB analog to AVI converter
for about $95 from Hardley Normals and just do it on your computer.
BTW Software sucks for audio I would suggest using your sound card
input. Then use TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG and Nero 6**** to burn to
DVD.

Hope this helps.

My Panasonic HS2 standalone DVD recorder accepts and records NTSC
signals from external sources. I presume later Panasonic models also
can do the same BUT I can't confirm......others reading this will
undoubtably be able to.
Of course if your tapes have macrovision thats another issue and
you'll need a macrovision remover to clean the signal before it goes
into the recorder.

An NTSC-PAL converter may help, be wary that some convert to PAL 60Hz so
some DVDRecs/TVs still won't like it.

I thought Macrovision only screwed up VCRs, not DVDRs?

If you try and record from a macrovisioned VHS tape to a DVD recorder you
will still have to deal with the macrovision problem.

Too bad that your not taping it on a Beta machine. None that I have respond
to
Macrovision.

Mitch.

Hello, I can use some advice. I live in USA and have about 30 PAL VHS
video tapes that I can not watch. I no longer have a PAL VCR & TV.

I own a USA NTSC TV, USA NTSC video player, and a PAL/NTSC DVD player.
I also have Windows computers with DVD drives if that is to be
considered.

So what would be the lowest cost method to be able to watch these
tapes once again?

The DVD Recorders have come down in price but I am not certain I can
convert a PAL video tape to a PAL DVDR? If that is possible that
would be fine as my DVD player will handle DVDRs in either PAL or NTSC
format.

I know I can have the videos converted to NTSC but the cost would be
perhaps as much as a new DVD Recorder so I decided to consider that
avenue.

Thank you. Joe.

The minimum you'll need is a PAL capable VCR. Check the specs of any DVDRec
that you might purchase, some will be able to record PAL50, some might be
PAL60.

Might be better for you if you know someone in Aus who can capture your
footage to data DVD, hard drive or author a movie DVD. Plenty of software
around to either capture real time directly to MPG2 NTSC DVD spec or the
long way of caputuring AVI then converting. Many VIVO video cards come with
bundled software that can capture any colour system/size you need.

If you were to do it yourself, you'd need a PAL VCR and a step up
transformer to get 220V/50Hz and a capture card or VIVO graphics card...
