In America they are selling the Infocus 4805 projector for $1499. If you
convert that to Australian $ thats $2102.

The advertised price in Australia however is $2999. How can they justify
such a huge difference. Its bloody ridiculous.

That goes for all projectors but it also goes for all Hi-Fi electronics in
general. Take a look at the price (and range) of amplifiers, dvd players
etc... in Europe. Unfortunately we're too far away from the major markets,
manufacturers are not forced by legislation to honour warranties and the
cost of shipping goods on a one-one basis are far too high for most people.
So we're basically stuck with greedy importers squeezing the market for all
it's worth and (since everybody's doing it) getting away with it.

I agree the Infocus 4805 is very expensive here compared to the US, but then again the new Hitachi TX100 Projector is $3500AUD (RRP) here and over there its $3999USD, very strange as 99% of the time we pay heaps more for most products than the yanks. The Americans are jumping up and down over the latters price.

Then there is pricejapan who can sell you the new Hitachi TX100 for $2200AUD delivered in OZ. http://www.pricejapan.com

A software program I was lookng at was $3200AUD here, in US is $900USD!.

Yea we know about import and freight costs the local distributors try and hide behind and they usually forget the fact all sellers either here or in the US have to (supposed to) support the products but the discrepencies are bloody ridiculos. Sometimes its the overseas based manufacturers who set the prices for each country too.

Think its about time the ACCC looked into these high prices.

Do bear in mind gentlemen that if the product in question IS made in say USA
the the importer has to pay for shipping, import duty, shipping around
Australia, warranty agreements & finally you have to pay the governments
GST. It all adds up.
By the way the say goes for products manufactured in Aus & sold on the world
market. Its then a bargain over here.

No not a "b" moron just an average bloke hunting up a good OZ deal.

Re second post. yes we've all heard that import/duty/gst one before. If you take say the Optoma H30 for instance the RRP is $4,000 AUD, in the US its close to $2,000 AUD after conversion, no way can there be that much difference.

The Infocus 4805 difference after AUD/USD conversion is about $1500 AUD the same applies.

Yep the 4805 here is a rip off. Unfortunately it still might provide the
best dvd experience under 3 k. About the only projector brand reasonably
priced here relative to the US are Benq. A more ridiculous example of price
gouging is the H30 by Optoma. I would really like to know how many H30s have
been sold in Australia. I suspect bugger all simply because of the greed of
the Importer. Shame really since its a solid product.

Hi Ben,
Seen a few of your posts around the forums. Did you buy a Pj n screen yet? if so which ones?.

I'm between a rock and a hard place trying to decide, at least my new house and movie room will not be finished for a while so I still have time to shop around and read forums.

There is very limited places to see low end Pj's here but next week we will be seeing the 4805 and the TX100 together locally that should be interesting.

Still favour the 4805 what what I've read though.

Local Retravision store has Sony progressive scan DVD player for just $189!, pro. scan should work good with 4805 they say.

is the 4805 being released here next week?

The price originally on Aussie sites for the 4805 was originally $2500 but
it is now $3000+. I dont know why there was a change but its stupid.

Ill prob just go for the Benq 6200 or the 6100 since they seem to be the
best for the price.

6100 is now $1500 thats a bargain. Who would pay double for the IF4805 with
a WVGA resolution?

Michael,
Yes Infocus should be in dealers next 7 days as will TX100.

Reason Benq prices are dropping new models 6110 and 6210 supposed to be released next month (August).

I'm staying with the 4805 at this point in time.

Its all in the eyes of the beholder, see them all first.

cheers...

Got the screen and the htpc and am about to make a decision on a projector.
Narrowed it down to the Hitachi TX100, Infocus 4805 and the Benq 6200 or
6210 (when its out). Hmm come to think of it thats not very narrowed down.

I suspect i will follow the gambler in me and get a cheap tx100 from Japan
and then live to regret it when it breaks. Probably all of the listed
options would give a great experience however the tx100 fits my room
slightly better, offers greater flexability with its lens shift and i like
the option of 1280 by 720 wide screen gaming. For dvd viewing i wouldnt be
suprised if the 4805 "looks" better but it i dont think it would be so
apparently obvious i would regret my choice.

Ben, Everyone to their own. I can't wait to see the TX100 and IF4805 next week. If its the TX100 I go for I have a few Jap friends who go back and forth to Japland near every month, so the're no guessing where my Hitachi will come from and it saves about $200 AUD as well.

By the way which screen did you go for?
Cheers

I have a TX-100, it bloody rocks. I pumped a 720p version of Fifth Element
thru it, breathtaking.

If you look at pretty much any product, it is cheaper in the US. Games consoles, binoculars, magazines, digital cameras, we get ripped off in comparison (I'd like to know why).

(I'll assume no-one will accuse me of not converting the prices. www.xe.com (http://www.xe.com))

Indeed. HTPC running via DVI. Windows XP desktop running at the projectors
native 1280x720 and at 120" is crystal clear, the fonts beautifully defined.
As mentioned below the Fifth Element and other Windows Media Player High
Definition stuff I played looks incredible. HDTV is stunning. This thing
has no Vertical banding, very minimal SD and awesome colour. The blacks and
contrast are IMHO excellent for an LCD. Widescreen gaming on the wall, like
the GTR Demo racing game is incredible.
The lens shift and HUGE lens with its mother of a zoom are a godsend to
people like me with small rooms and awkward mounting areas. The fan is
whisper quiet. I havent even gone about tinkering to improve it as the out
of box performance was so good as to initially keep me happy. I cannot begin
to do it justice verbally, you need to see it running. Best $3K I ever
spent.

Im going to reply more to this post in the morning as theres more a lot I want to mention and Im ready for bed, but I can't go to sleep with out making the following point.

A lot of people here seem more interested in getting a good deal than getting a good product.

??? I would disagree with that.... more like a good deal on the best
product they can afford. That's a philisophy that applies to most of us
most of the time. One one side of the purchsing bell curve you have those
that insist on the cheapest price for the product they buy and will leave
no stone unturned in the thrill of the chase, on the other side of the
bell curve you have those purchasing the same product who are prepared to
pay more, based on service, convenience, laziness etc.

If your theory was correct, everyone would be driving <insert exensive
luxury car of choice here> and yet a survey of the driving public doesn't
seem to back that up,
