(my start up folder is empty)
in win 98 it was msconfig.. but i dont know how to do it in 2000.
also .. has anyone else probs with a "bad pool caller" blue screen ?? it crashes all the time. i can just leave the machine turned on with no proggies running and it just crashes. grr crashes heaps when playing games too (evil grin)
(lucky its my office machine so i can slack off while it takes 5-10mins to reboot :) :) )

hi,
In winXp it is also msconfig. I'm pretty sure it is not included in Win2K. I'm also pretty sure the winXP ver will work with xin2k.
email me if you want the file to try.
thanks

best way to edit start up is to download a program called regcleaner. But if you want to make things difficult you could always venture into ur registry and edit out the unwanted start up items. (not recomended to muck around with registy)

all i really wanna do is turn off that damn auto update feature.. it keeps popping up all the time and its rather annoying
There is in fact an msconfig made to work with W2K. Search for Win2000 msconfig in a search engine. I had a copy somewhere....
Found it. Attached to this message.

Bad pool caller is often caused by a bad driver or program trying to access memory or an IRQL incorrectly.

hi
ive read in a website that msconfig with win2k is not a nice idea, ide go for regcleaner myself, also go to run and type services.msc
it will bring up a whole list of stuff that u can disable/enable/or leave on automatic, i am 80% sure that auto update feature is there and turned on so if u dont like it right click on the service theen choose properties then Disable from the drop downlist. Offcourse before u do anything read and make sure of what ure doing and do the usual backing up, also turn one feature of then reset and if all is good for for next feature.
got the website, its got a faq for winxp and win2k, very good info on it for all:

OK, try this. Go into the Device Manager --> View --> Resources by Connection. Look at the Memory section. You will see several devices followed by address ranges in brackets. Look for something that would contain 0xE28E4580. Tell me what you find out.

ok.. i think i have done this right.
there is nothing there with that specific address however....
between the ranges of
E0000000-E7FFFFFF SIS accelerated Graphics port
and when you click the plus sign next to it it says
E0000000-E7FFFFFF SIS650_651_M650_740
hope that makes sense :)
i upgraded the mother board drivers (downloaded from gigabyte) yesterday but the machine still crashed with the same error. The board is a GA-85IMLP
i also noticed that when i view resourses by type and show hidden devices, under the display adapters it has listed:
S3 prosavageDDR
SIS650_651_M650_740
i clicked on the S3 properties and it says :
"This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"
should the S3 be there ???
thanks again for the help :)

Hi, whizzfizz.
Do you mean the Gigabyte GA-8SIMLP? It does sound like it has something to do with the graphics. From your description of the Device Manager, it also sounds like you are using the integrated graphics, as opposed to an AGP card?
I would think that the drivers from Gigabyte should be good enough, but if not, you can also try the drivers directly from SiS:
http://download.sis.com/sisdlc/index.jsp
I would not expect to see the S3 ProsavageDDR in there. Did you swap out motherboards or something? That looks like something I would expect to see from a VIA chipset with integrated graphics. For that matter, did you uninstall any S3 drivers or VIA 4-in-1 drivers before installing the 8SIMLP?

ahhhh!!!!!!
you just twigged something there...
when we bought this machine the computer dood noticed that the wrong m/b was installed.... that would explain why the S3 is probably still sitting there (from the wrong board).
i will remove it from the device list tomorrow and see how it goes.
yes we are using an on board video
if getting rid of the s3 doesnt work.. i will try and get those SIS drivers.
thanks again dood i think we got this beat.!!!!!!!!

That's pretty much would I would do. I would probably go through Add/Remove Programs before going through the device manager, though. There might be some sort of S3 display utility lurking in the background.
