msi- ms6178 motherboard, will it run a Tualatin 1.a ghz processor?
HI everyone.

Somewhere a couple of weeks ago I saw on a spec page that that motherboard would run up to 1.3mghz. I cannot find that page again and have since bid and won the above mentioned tualatin celeron processor.
Now I am finding everywhere I look that it is not compatible with my board.
I am waiting on an email back from the motherboard tech support but if anyone here can shed some light on the matter I would be eternally grateful . I have emailed the motherboard mob a couple of times over the last two weeks with no response. I know all the sites say it goes up to 900mgz but what would happen if I put it on anyway?

If you try and run the 1ghz cpu on the board, it will blow up.

:p
Just kidding. The cpu support list for your board lists that it will run up to a 900mhz celeron Coppermine at 100mhz FSB, but it's unable to run the 1ghz Tualatin or any of the tualatin cpu's for that matter.
I'd imagine this would be due to the voltage the CPU requires?
Anyway, the cpu support list can be found here (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=116&kind=1)

Actually, I interpret the "N/A" in that CPU compatability list to mean "not available", as in, "we have not tested it". In many cases, other motherboards' lists say "NO" explicitly when a CPU is incompatible.

That being said, the Tualatin CPU will not work in your motherboard by itself. Your motherboard was made for Coppermine, and Intel changed the pin and voltage configuration with the Tualatin processor.

You may, however, get it to work with a Lin-Lin Tualatin adapter. There are several threads on this forum about this, so do a quick search. One of the threads is actually current. People have gotten it to work with varying degrees of success, so no guarantees. Fortunately, this adapter is fairly inexpensive, so you do not lose all that much of it does not work. You can often find it on eBay.

By the way, the Tualatin Celeron 1.0A runs at 1.5V. If it does not work in your motherboard, the only thing that will happen is that your computer fails to POST. It won't break anything, though. ;)

thankyou so much, that is a very detailed answer. I'll think I'll get in touch with the underbidder again and see if he still wants it :)
Cheers,
