hello all... (again) :)

was hoping someone could shed some light on this one.

Was playing a game on the weekend when machine crashed..... rebooted to get the "hard drive boot failure" or something like that error

i tried two other hard drives.
I tried installing the other h/d's on two different controlers (ie the expansion card and the onboard controlers)
i tried using different cables
doh.. nuffin werked.
i tried my main h/d here at the office in another machine and it works fine.

i assume there is something wrong with the m/board ???

Hey, whizzfizz.

Uh oh, that doesn't sound good. Something else you might try is to go into the BIOS and see if it can detect the hard drive from in there, and also the boot order. Also, can the computer boot to a floppy or CD-ROM? When you boot with the expansion card, does the expansion card go through its own hard drive detection routine? Which operating system are you using, and which file system (FAT32 vs. NTFS)? It sounds like you have pretty much tested everything else. It sounds like the hard drive itself is OK.

As for the chipsets, Intel is generally regarded as the "reference" chipset while SiS is the "value" chipset. Sometimes, however, SiS can come up with new features in their products (like AGP 8x) before Intel. For this reason, it can be more useful to do a side-by-side comparison of two specific chipsets.

hey man..
thanks for the reply :)

re: BIOS detecting h/d.. tried that with a 1.2 drive and it didnt pick the drive up..i was a bit on the dodgy side about it trying to detect my 40g or 80g because i didnt think it would detect a h/d that large. (the board is an old Asus p2B)

My floopy disk drive is also buggered hehe so i couldnt boot to that.. and i cant remember seeing the option to boot from CD

the expansion card (promise) does it own detection... it actually picks up the h/d no worries

am using good old win98 and.. FAT 32

thanks for the confirmation that the board was bugggered.. a second opinion is always

thank you very very much for you time.
cheers
