A simple question.
Do you think Australia should be a republic?
...If anybody is offended then you don't have to reply.

My opinion.
The day the queen's face is gone from our coins will be a great day.
(unless its replaced by a politicians face..)

I want to see them try to fit John Howard's eyebrows onto a coin :)

And we should scrap the Union Jack from our flag and acknowledge the people who rightfully own this land.

The coins would have to become a lot bigger. Then society wouldn't be able to function since met machines and drink machines wouldn't work, slowly setting off a chain of buisness failures until we've become an economic slump. But even with bigger coins i doubt they'd fit.

Republic gets my vote. We deserve to be independent.

The Monarchy has served its purpose - time for independence in my book but I'm sure the Royalists have some justifiable cause too

Whoopee for the republic, but I really don't think it makes a difference to the person on the street if the reserve powers used to sack another prime minister are used by a governor general or a president. Where is the "it makes no difference" option, you insensitive clod?

i've never supported 'maybe' or 'in between' answers. If someone doesn't feel it matters then they ought not to vote. Other wise you get a bunch of people who don't care having an opinion. :)

I'd say you're right there - although I do know of countries where they have both President (figure head) and PM

We need someone to have a different opinion to spark a small but intersting debate. Pity my views aren't different.

Loyalty to the crown does have some merit - of that I am sure - how much merit in this day and age, not sure

The one thing I see as potentially dubious with having a President is that we'd become even more *Americanized*.

That would be John Howards dream. Then he could be a real live president just like Bush.

I think Monarchy because there seems no need to change

Gee, there's a lot of us landowners out there. How will you fit us all on the coin?

I don't care either way, as to whether or not we become a republic.
If our flag was to change, I think the Union Jack should be replaced with the Southern cross a la Eureka Stockade style, to show Australia's fighting spirit. Though I like our flag as it is. It shows our heritage.
Or we could do the flag as an Aboriginal painting. Make it unique, with dancing Mimi spirits, because they're very mischievous.

Other wise you get a bunch of people who don't care having an opinion.I didn't see that in the 'rules', though I didn't vote anyway, but I'm still allowed an opinion. There's good and bad either road we decide to travel. For me, neither argument outways the other.

Actually, I did not vote because I am of the firmly held opinion that transferring the reserve powers from a governor general to a president is just a cosmetic change.

Regarding your answer to "Bad AJ's" question: "if we become republic, we dont have a prime minister anymore, we have a president, am i right?" the correct answer is no. We will still have a prime minister as "head of government," but instead of the queen, as represented by the governor general as "head of state" we will have a president. The latter title is mainly a symbolic one, much like in Germany that has both, a prime minister leading the government, and a president fulfilling largely ceremonial functions.
