Without a doubt, it would have to be the street fighter series. The hybrid 3d attempts such as the street fighter alpha's wern't too bad either. :)

My favourite would have to be Mortal Kombat.

It combines two of the two best fighting games
(IMO) Streetfighter and King of fighters.

Just a minute. Do you want what I think is the best 2D fighter ever or my favourite 2D fighter? Theyre not necessarily the same thing.

On a technical level I'd have to say Capcom's Street Fighter III 3rd Strike (coming to PAL PS2 very soon). Teh 2D fighting is super balanced and for fightin' purist it cant be beat. Lacks the bells n' whistles of other titles but for what it does it does BETTER than any other 2D fighter currently going. Awesome animation as well (pity the sprites arent hires :( )

My favourite 2D fighter is Garou: Mark of the Wolves (SNK). If I could only play one 2D brawler this would be it.

Other 2D fighters that I rate very highly: Last Blade 2, KOF98, Darkstalkers 3, GGX. SFA3.

Old school respect must be paid to The Way of the Exploding Fist and IK+ (killer bouncing balls and jumping bulls!!).

Not a fan of Capcom's crazy Vs series, though Marvel Vs Capcom 2 is amusing occasionally. CvsSNK series sh*ts me totally. So don't get me started on that... :D Worst 2D fighter woudl be something like Killer Instinct Gold on the N64. The Mortal Kombat series got pretty stinky as well.

Still waiting (wanting) to play JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Anyone have that? What's it like?
