Hi all,

I've currently got a DD and DTS 5.1 receiver and speaker setup. I'd love to
upgrade to 6.1 or 7.1 because the room is big and there's a bit of a gap in the
sound at the rear, but I've never seen a DVD mention that it has a 6.1 or 7.1
soundtrack. Do they exist? Any examples?

Thanks for any help.

There are quite a few DVDs out there with 6.1 support.

The LOTR extended editions (for example) both have a 6.1 soundtrack available. (I particularly like the use of it in the fight with the cave troll)

This site has a fairly good list of DVD 6.1 Titles

7.1 is a home playback format (2 centre rear channels) so you won't find it
mentioned on any software.

On the back of the DVD lookout for the legends Dolby Digital EX, DTS ES
Matrix, DTS ES Discrete.

Ooh, something I own. Must have a look at it when I get home. I think my
receiver may support 6.1 if I hook up a another amplifier to drive the 6th
channel. Guess what I'll be doing this weekend. :)

These pages have some DTS-ES marked if you have a DTS amp. Some 6.1 DTS
titles will also have a 6.1 DD track, but not always, and if they do, the
video quality would probably be lowish for a standard movie duration...
hopefully HD DVD/ blu ray will help out there. BTW Sony have announced that
they're using Blu ray for the PS3, so expect another format war!

I have a denon 3802, and the only 6.1 dvd's i have are castaway region 1, fellowship of the ring, two towers. Mind you they do sound amazing with the extra speaker/speakers. I am looking forward to this becoming more mainstream.

The Star Wars movies 1,2,4,5, and 6 all have Dolby ES sound tracks.

You mean EX, Dolby's 5.1 format with a non discrete rear centre.

Here's a couple of lists that highlight ES titles -

When buying, make sure to check the region and release info closely, as
there are quite a few variants of the same movie...
