The Mighty Reds, the Manchester United Football Club has held a special place in the hearts of football fans for over a century. Since 1871, the club has won the FA Cup Final ten times - more than any other club.
In 1999 - 2000 season Manchester United, managed by the volatile Sir Alex Ferguson, fielded one of it's best and most illustrious sides including David Beckham, Mark Bosnich, Andrew Cole, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keane, Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The previous year they had taken the Treble and the FA Cup, the premiership and improbably, almost impossibly, The European Cup. At the close of the millennium, they were without doubt the best football club in the world.
From the boardroom to the locker room, 'Manchester United' is a fascinating and intimate insight into the inner-workings of this great club. Our cameras follow the players behind the scenes as they relax on the golf course and meet some of their most passionate fans. It even takes you on tour as one of the world’s largest sports franchises carries on their winning streak through Japan, Argentina, Brazil, China and Australia.

Audio:
The first thing I noticed when watching this sports documentary was the effort made on the sound quality, right from when it starts you get the feeling that the sound is going to be good. This title only sports Dolby Digital 5.1 a wise choice for a sporting title. However the four surround speakers mainly get used during music passages, which are at a higher than expected volume. The centre speaker does most of the work. the dialogue is nice and clear, that mumbling is just a mad Scotsman! The audio accompanying the old footage is also well restored and seems very clear and free of nasties. Overall for a sports doco the audio here is top notch!
Video:
The video quality doesn't fare quite so well. It is presented in 1.77:1, which is perfect for any 16:9 television, no black bars here. The image is also 16:9 enhanced. The reason for the less than stellar performance here is due to a wide variety of film types and capture methods. Some of the video is very crisp and clear, almost perfect, whereas other sections are terribly grainy, suffer from MPEG artefacts and seem to be of lower than PAL resolution, almost VHS quality. The old black and white footage is quite good though. On the whole this is quite good for what could be a TV documentary.

EXTRA FEATURES:

Audio Commentary :
Commentary is provided here by Bob Potter (Director) and Paul Doyle jr (Editor). This starts off ok, talking about the making of the film ,the opening scenes and soundtrack and then without warning, a half minute break, followed by a little more talking, then another half minute break, more talking, then a whopping 4 minute break, so in the first 8 minutes, there was only 3 minutes of commentary. This is a fairly poor start and things don't get much better with plenty of half minute or more breaks. The commentary given is interesting enough, but after watching film commentaries this is very sparse.
Trailer :
This is a good trailer for the doco, it runs for 1.44, is presented in 16:9 with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio.
Interviews :
There are five interviews included, total running time is 41.20, more than half of the feature. They are all in 4:3, full frame, with Dolby Digital 2.0 audio. The five people interviewed are Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Bobby Charlton, Ryan Giggs, Roy Keene and David Beckham. The pick of the interviews is with Sir Bobby Charlton, he is interesting, passionate and tells a good story, Beckham was not at all comfortable and I could barely understand a word Sir Alex Ferguson said.

OVERALL:

This is not what I was expecting, there is hardly any soccer in it at all, but there is plenty of what makes Manchester United and this is certainly one for the fans.
Manchester United - Beyond the Promised Land is currently available with a recommended price of $29.95
