Nikon AFD 35-70 f2.8 weirdness

A fine lense indeed. But, having just acquired an F3, I now have
occassion to set the aperture ring to other than red-22. However, in
doing so, the lense refuses to zoom beyond 50mm, getting progresively
tighter from around 45mm. Surely this isn't kosher?

Anyone else with this lense that displays the same weirdness?

Can't imagine why it would be so.
