Hi,
I'm planning to build Subwoofer based on 12" Shiva driver and 142.5L
vented, EBS design box ( by Adire Audio). I have to decide on the amp
and the option at this stage is:

AVA250 http://www.adireaudio.com/ (DIY section)
HS200 http://www.hypex.nl/
RGSW-1 http://www.redgumaudio.com/Store/Oz/95.html

I'm looking for some opinion/advise on which of the three is the best
chioce. It will be used for HT and the music as well.
Thanks,
Michal

Hi Michal

I built a sub last year with the Shiva, but the 88 litre sealed enclsure.
(142 is just HUGE!) I used the Jaycar 240watt sub amp which is basically
the same as the AVA250. Got it on sale for $260 from memory. I did mod it
though, changing the EQ curve to suit a(s it had a 6db boost at 35 hz) to be
instead around 2db at 21hz. That flattened the resposnse curve and gave a
slight boost at the bottom. The details of the changes can be found at the
Parts Express website (www.partsexpress.com) They also sell the same amp.
I have absolutely no complaints with the driver or the amp, and the box
which I had built by Acoustic Concepts in Melbourne, is fantastic. 32 mm
veneered MDF all round, solid and HEAVY! Absolutely awesome on music,
tight, clean and LOUD. Movies too are great but (thankfully!) the sub
doesn't have that awful mid bass "punch" that is so prevalent in many
systems. It simply disappears into the rest of the system.

If I had more money I'd probably go with the Redgum amp next time as it does
have a better power supply. So far though I have not had the Jaycar run out
of puff!

Are you in Melbourne? Maybe we might be able to arrange an audition!

Tim,
thanks for the post and invitation...:)).
I'm located in Perth so....bit too far away.

I have recently upgraded my speakers to B&W, the only thing left is
subwoofer, but B&W subby is definitely out of my budget, that's why I
decided to build my own.

I know 142L subby is a lot of volume, but 3 years ago I add a room to
my house just for HT purpose (well, my wife still does not get it...)

The room is 6x6x2.9 (m) so it has some volume to fill in. The shape is
not the best for the purpose, but with time I will fill it with book
shelves, carpets and whatever will do the job, to make it more "audio
user friendly"

The Redgum caught my aye, but there is not much info/feedback about it
on the net.

I will think about your setup.

Thanks again,
Michal

Hi Michal,
Wes Components in Sydney www.wescomponents.com also sell a version of the
HS200 Amp.
It has been modified slightly.
They also have kits based on the Peerless XLS12", and sell the raw drivers,
PR's etc separately.
I built a DIY using the XLS 10" with 12" Pr and used the Partsexpress 250W
amp (similar to the jaycar unit)
I would suggest it is a little lacking in power for what you may want with
142L....
I do think they have a 350W or a 500W I cannot quite remember.
cheers
Craig

Hi Michael, I have just completed construction of my Sub. I went with the
15" Tempest driver and used the RGSW-2 amp. The box is made fro 1.5" MDF and
it too heavy to lift :^)

Musically it is superb. The RG amp hangs on to the driver very well and
fills the room without giving me the Boom boom boom boom effect some subs
can give.

It is paired up with a set of VAF audio DC-x,7 and 6 HT set up.

So if you can stretch the budget for the RG i would advise it .

Cheers

No problems Michal. Your room is a bit bigger than mine, which is about
4.5m x 4.3m, but is open to the "family" area quite a bit at the back. You
won't go wrong with the Adire drivers, nor the redgum amp.

Cheers
