Well,

I would have been mighty pissed if, like tens of thousands of others, I had
purchased a SD STB in the leadup to the olympics only to find out that all
the sport was going to be in 4:3. I would have resigned myself to looking
forward to the opening ceremony in glorious widescreen only to wake up at
3am and be shocked by a shitty 4:3 broadcast on SD.

I am considering myself lucky that I purchased a HD STB a few days ago
instead. Fantastic widescreen pictures and without a doubt the best picture
quality seen on 7 so far (NBC 1080i converted to 576p). Great commentary,
fantastic camera work and ace editing made it a broadcast not to miss.

I would be ropeable if I had been conned into thinking the opening ceremony,
let alone the whole olympics, were going to be broadcast in anything but
4:3.

Well the delayed telecast was in typical channel 16-9 style, plain old 4:3

WTF .

Ive got a Digitec but cant get bloody wide screen out of it at all , i just assumed that it was an utter dissapointment that we had to put up with this 4:3 crap in this day and age of modern technology and just thought that is was boradcast in 4:3 only .

Anyone tell me how to convert it to widescreen on the Digitec HD ( im sure i tried all the options in the AV setup )

Thanx guys

Nothing wrong with your STB, except for the opening and closing cerimonies,
everything else is in 4:3 whether its' HD or SD.

It's in 4:3 as dictated by the I.O.C. Bejing sees it in WS.

This is from reading on the 'net, I have no interest in anything Olympics
related.

I guess we have to thank Alston for the majority of this fiasco. What
I can't understand is why digital TV has only gone to 16:9 at best
anyway. When you consider that the Cinema industry standard is 1:1.85
in the minimum varying to 1:2.3 for most movies it's kind of dumb not
to have gone right out. You watch, a few years down the track there
will be a push for wider screen format and we'll all want to throw our
16:9s away.

No the IOC, they decreed 4:3 for Athens 16:9 HD for Bejing AFAIK.
