View Full Version : AVerMedia PC card
Hi Everyone.
I recently bought myself AVerTV DVB-T 771 PCI card. The dude I spoke to on
the phone, said IT CAN receive HD.
this is the card
http://www.jw.com.au/products_closeup.asp?part=AverMedia&part_no=745
All I can receive are the SD channels.
I can switch to the HD channels. But the picture is messed up and no sound.
All is says on the box the card came in, is that you can Watch Digital
Terrestrial TV on PC.
Theirs nothing in the manual about HD or even SD.
Did the guy lie to me about it having HD?
Any clues?
Thanks

That'll be a software issue. How grunty is your PC?
Basically, all the cards available in Australia are "budget" versions
(that is, they have no MPEG-2 decoder or TV-out -- "full-feature" cards
have both, and are quite common in Europe). All they do is pick up the
MPEG-2 transport stream as broadcast, and that's picked up and used by
whatever software you're running.
Decoding HD broadcasts is a pretty big job, so you need a fairly
high-end PC to be able to cope. And of course you need a display
with sufficient resolution for it to be worth doing in the first
place.
I have no direct experience with the particular card you've got,
so don't know if the software shipped with it is able to handle HD.
But the hardware itself shouldn't care.

All of these types of cards are just dumb receivers, so it does receive
HD channels. So technically what you were told is correct.
The displaying of the channels on the other hand is all software based,
so that is were your problem probably is. Haven't got on of these cards
so I can't offer any advice on that score, but someone else out there might.
Of course the usual "download latest software and drivers" would always
be a good place to start, I know a lot of early versions of various
other DVB card software had HD "issues". I remember having sound
problems myself with 9HD at one point, which I think was a driver/codec
issue, but that went away with software updates.
Might help to say what "messed up" is too. Do you get any picture at all?

It's a software issue. Ie: The supplied software is crap.
Does anyone know of a 3rd Party Program like Dscaler that will work with one
of these cards?

Well my HD channels work. When I say channels I mean a channel actually
because I am in Tasmania and the only HD here is SBS and ABC and my ABC
signal is weak, too weak even for SD to run well. SBS HD works though. I
think the new software version is a little better at HD, v1.3.57.6
(http://www.avermedia.com/cgi-bin/support_download.asp). It is still
crap though, it crashes on ABC HD when it cannot cope with reception and
I am sure there are rendering problems in it as it suddenly looses
framerate for ages... The recorder works but you have to be careful, for
instance I set something to record then screensaver came on and it
errored out with an error about not being able to open drawing surface.
Not really well thought out there. Not to mention I think the interface
is terrible... In options there is an option for skins but there are
none out there :)
I'd love to know if there is other software out there that can work with
this card. I couldn't find any. I dont really know if this is even
feasible/done.

Did he elaborate? CPU too slow?

SBS don't do HD. Just the same 576p as 7. Same resolution as SD.

Maybe it cant cope with 1080i ?

If you don't mind getting down and dirty with Linux then check out www.mythtv.org. It supports the Aver DVB-T cards.
Check out this months Australian Personal Computer as there is a
section on these cards and the software etc. Also check the forums at
http://www.dtvforum.info.

You'll need something closer to the 3GHz mark to play HD on a PC,
at least with the MPEG-2 codecs I've tried.
To be honest I'm not sure what the fuss is about -- unless you've got
money to burn there really isn't enough HD programming to be worth
the outlay currently required, and SD on a reasonable display looks
pretty good -- certainly better (to my eye) than analogue.
