Spleen vented. Here's something I just fired off. BTW, it isn't
handled as an official complaint unless you mail or fax it. Seven
clearly don't know how to present real sport or use their own medium and
tools:

Dear Seven,

I have been watching your Olympic Extra channel on digital 71 and find
the side bar and footer to be less than useful and very poorly thought out.

You should devote some of the screen to providing information about the
actual event being shown rather than just use it to advertise your other
television shows and display old information about the previous days events.

For example, I was watching the gymnastics last night and instead of
seeing statistics on each team, current results, and who was on what
apparatus, the page was instead listing irrelevant biographical
information about swimmers and results from heats in other events
earlier in the day. And the most important summary info - the medal
tally - was nowhere at all.

There is nothing wrong with summarising old information every now and
again, but you have the mixture of old / current / irrelevant wrong and
so don't use the extra screen space to enhance the live event being shown.

Also, remove your Seven television show promotional material. It is
definitely not an enhancement.

You missed the most obvious flaw! That the windowed broadcast
is a 4x3 picture which has been squashed almost square. So it is a
compressed view. Who want's to watch that?!

Are you sure of that, it looks ok to me.

It's displaying 3.8:3 (instead of 4:3) and I commented about this the
moment they started transmitting 71 in this fashion.

All I can think of is that $even are either incompetent or just greedy.

I suspect the latter before the former, due to the fact that they are
advertising other trashy shows on the top left box, and rather than get
the aspect of their ads wrong they sacrifice the screen dimensions.

They are so obvious with everything they do - $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is all
they care about. What about all the ads for those trashy (and somewhat
pathetic sensationalist) "reality" shows they do full 16:9 ads for in
the breaks?

I for one will not watch one pixel of $even after the games.

I find I am also tuning to SBS for a lot of unadvertised Olympics
coverage because going to ads in the closing stages of the womens road
cycle race the other day was inexcusable.

Do I care whether some wench can pick out the gay men from the straight
ones in their attempt at cashing in on the metro sexual craze which Ten
has (Queer Eye)? No I don't because it speaks silly discrimination to
me, and I'm waiting for the day some straight guy get poofter bashed
after that show airs (a gross projection - sorry).

Kochy on Sunrise this morning stated "Your Sunrise"?????? Huh? Sorry
David K - $even owns Sunrise not the viewers, and it was hilarious on
Media Watch last night to see Koch and fellow idiots caught out "Live
from Athens" - it was 6AM in Sydney, which would have made it 11PM the
day before in Greece, yet there was the Acropolis in morning light - tut
tut.

It's worth noting that I receive DTV on my computer which shows the
overscanned 16:9 vision on CH71 and there is even a black bar on the
right of the supposed 4:3 vision box and it's not 4:3 (it's 3.8:3) there
either.

I thought it was the safe area of my TV at first but I've been
investigating this since 71 began transmissions in this format and by my
estimation they have it wrong.

It's so annoying (what with all the useless factoids and advertising for
sensationalist rubbishTV(tm)) that I go to either SBS or 7 Main and
throw the STB into Pan&Scan or 4:3 mode and the TV into it's 16:9 Cine
mode which gives a very watchable and pleasant 16:9 horizontal centre
cut because the host vision is adhering to the 4:3 safe areas very well.

Both I think... and their producers have been drinking far too much coffee
because they seem to have the attention span of a flea, which is really what
makes Seven's coverage so unwatchable IMHO.

Thank $deity for SBS.

(Methinks maybe Ivan's been drinking too much coffee too.) ;-)

Yep, it strangely enough does look ok if you've calibrated your tv
correctly!

If you take a capture using a digital tv card and stretch the 720 by 576
pixel image to the anamorphic display ratio of 1024 by 576 you can
measure the exact ratio.
The video image window has a size of 626 horizontal by 480 vertical
display pixels. That is very close to 4:3 ratio. It's a ratio of 1.3042
to be exact. Which is far from the 1:1 square some people are claiming.
If you do see it as square then adjust your television or your eyes.

kubalister
18-08-2004, 06:15 AM
Incorrect. The display ratio is 3.91:3
That is based on an anamorphically stretched resolution of 626
horizontally and 480 vertically.
The raw unstretched image size is 440 by 480 pixels.

Yep, the horizontal error is a MASSIVE 2.25%

C'mon guys! It's just Television! Switch it off and go outside and play in the glorious sunshine (or rain, if you're in Melbourne...)

I'm more pissed off it's not in widescreen than whatever it is you're banging on about... thanks for the laugh though!

p.s. - I'm hoping you're just trying to bait someone, and you're not serious about this! :)

Incorrect. The display ratio is 3.91:3

Funny really how 2 1/4% is visible to the naked eye, but it is annoying.

thanks for the exact ratio because my 3.8:3 was based on subjective
interpretation only ;)

Tea actually. Coffee makes my skin go blotchy. ;)

I inadvertently video-taped some of channel 71 from a few days ago.
Switching between the tape and the live feed there is an obvious
difference. They've been fiddling with the layout of the screen. It
looked very close to square off the tape.

yeah sadly seven's the only channel which shows cool things like futurama,
angel/buffy, dark angel, family guy etc
pity they usually put them on after midnight :P
