I want an AV receiver that I can connect my DVD player, VCR, foxtel, digital settop box and stereo to and have output to 3 separate rooms. Room1 has Tv and 5.1 surround sound, room2 has stereo TV (no additional speakers) and room 3 (patio) has stereo speakers. I would want to be able to watch a DVD in room 1 while my kids watch a video in room 2 and the missus listen to music on the patio. Any recommendations on a/v receivers that can do this without breaking the bank?

Most receivers have a room/zone2 out that you can achieve independent
sources with. As far as the wife goes - buy her a cheap MP3 player
;-)

Or make the Patio zone 2 and buy the kids a cheap ($69) DVD player
instead and have their Fox box run back to your main room.

Sometimes it is just easier to use a cheap solution - I did ;-)

THe only receiver that I am aware to do all that is sony 9000 series receiver.

However cost is between $5000 to $6000.

I know some of the Bose lifestyle systems do this; unfortunately they don't come cheap either.

As far as I am aware,a reciever can only be in ONE INPUT an any one time, so if you want to view a dvd in room "A" that is it! you can watch the same programme in room "B",but not a VIDEO.as you can't have two inputs selected at one time

We have a Bose lifestyle 50 system (a few years old now) and a Rotel receiver. We can watch a DVD in one room, play a CD in our dining room, and the radio by the pool if we so desire. All controlled by the one "MRI", or multi-room interface. We can also channel any of these to a Bose wave radio in our bedroom. So yes, it can be done. It wasn't cheap though.

There are a few that I have seen that have multi room video eg marantz SR-8300 and SR-9300 see pdf brochure for these

http://www.marantz.com.au/downloads/prod_pdf/sr-8300_aus.pdf

However these wont give you three sources for sound.

But the only receiver I am aware that can have multiroom fucntions for the sources of video and three sources of sound is the sony 9000, but I am sure there are others like venus's bose system. How much was this system venus??

As I said, it was going on three years ago now, but I'm pretty sure the lifestyle 50 system (which has a 4 room interface) was around $6000. That didn't include installation. We are very glad we went that way though, as it is a very convenient set up. (Even though the purists seem to thumb their noses at Bose)

Yes, but only the DVD is digital (5.1); the rest are stereo connections. We have certainly operated DVD (digital) in our family room, "easy listening" CD in our dining room, and FM around the pool AT THE SAME TIME(to cater for all members of the family). We also have a 4th zone in our outside eating area.
