View Full Version : Why no 16:9 on The Dream?

Ok, so the Olympic footage can't be WS but why the hell can't the rest of
the show be WS?
For that matter why can't any footage inside 7's studios be WS?
Wankers.

Coz it's cheaper and there's a captive audience. Why try?

Seven have previously said something about consistency. That's why, even tho
their commentators are almost all in Seven's 16:9 Melbourne studios, they
also appear in 4:3.
Take a deep breath and wait for Beijing 2008.

Some of the ads are in 16:9
Switching is seamless. Uniformity is a lame excuse.

Well, not really. On widescreen you can clearly see the 4:3 to 16:9
switching happening as a "stretch" as they flick form one to the other.
> Uniformity is a lame excuse.
Absolutely. Although I notice The Dream is also "copyright IOC", therefore
it's likely being recorded and transmitted via the IOC's 4:3 mandated
format. I think that's probably the real reason. Not an excuse for the local
presenters, of course, except that Seven probably wants people to believe
they're also in Athens.

It's yet 1 more example of Seven's incompetence. Whoever at Seven
makes these decisions is plainly clueless.

Well they aren't known as CH 16-9 for nothing ;)
I am over having a go a $even about this 4:3 (mass populous) and 16:9
(minimal market viewership) "issue".
I chuck the Strong into 4:3 centre cut mode and the Loewe TV into "Cine"
mode which does a vertical centre cut to 16:9.
The great thing is that the are so within the "safe" area for 4:3 that
you miss nothing and you get 16:9.
I know this of little help to projector owners and others unable shift
their display devices from a fixed aspect, but I now have no cause to
have a go about CH4+3 and I look forward to the 2008 Games, where I am
sure that everything will be in glorious 16:9 ;)
Oz
Do you also think by then HD will be more common place and every event will
be 16:9 1080i. but then again i guess if Seven still have the rights they'll
downscale that to 576p.

Sunrise carries the same notice - i think it applies to the olympic footage
used rather then the programming itself.

You sure it's the whole show that's copyright and not just the Olympic
footage they use?
How can the IOC tell a TV station how to broadcast non-Olympic footage? Oh,
sorry, forgot we were talking about channel 4:3, they just bend over and
take it...

If we are really lucky, they'll stop their miserliness and use 720p! :)

And another thing, watch the WS monitor behind them when they come back from
footage outside the studio. It's a 4:3 pic stretched to 16:9 so the studio
audience gets to watch fat people competing.
