I just noticed this forum so I thought I might kick it off with it's first thread.

I noticed a Danoz Direct TV ad a few weeks ago. It was about the world's smallest digital camera. Only $50 (plus $10 P + H of course).

I am interested in buying this but I don't know much about cameras. I only want to take small pictures, maybe about the size of a normal photo.

Would this camera do the job? It's a pretty good bargain I reckon. Pity about the 16MB limit.

Thane Mini Digital Camera

Can you find a smaller Digital Camera in the World?

The Mini Digital Camera is absolutely tiny! It is on the end of a key chain - small enough to be placed with your set of keys and only weighs 30grams.

The Mini Digital Camera allows you to choose from ‘Lo’ resolution (176x144 pixels) or ‘Hi’ resolution (352x288 pixels). The Mini Digital Camera has a memory of 16MB. In ‘Lo’ resolution, up to 80 images can be stored in the camera. In ‘Hi’ resolution, up to 20 images can be stored in the camera. These photos can then be transferred to your PC to print. There is also a timer option to allow for ‘timing’ picture taking.

The Mini Digital Camera also allows you to select a ‘continuous shooting’ mode which can take up to 80 shots in succession. Using the included software, these shots can then be transferred to your PC and made into your own digital movie.

The Mini Digital Camera can also be used as a web cam. Using the included software, this will allow you to use the Internet to be face to face with your friends who also have web cams.

I would buy a prepaid mobile with phone camera, has better resolution (I think) and doubles as a mobile.

These tiny cameras float around on eBay for under $30, so $50 is a big ask.

Yeah, but this has a warranty and guarantee and everything. Mobile phone cameras cost over $200 usually ( I think ).

Not anymore.... Optus currently have the following...

Siemens MC60 $159 (Prepaid)
Motorola E365 $199 (Prepaid)
Nokia 3200 $249 (Prepaid)

Bargain eh!

As for the little cameras, I have also seen this at a store, but can't remember which one, so warranty may not be a big issue, for $30 I'll take a concrete warranty ;)

I've seen one might of been a cannon or might of been a fujitsu (?), the size of a credit card, had an LCD built in and a decent res. This wolud be a far better option if you were chasing a smaller sized camera. Price is a lot more though.

Yeah, I'm on a very tight budget. But I'm also thinking about getting about a new phone. So $70 + $60 = $130, or getting a camera phone. That Siemens MC60 was $199 on the Optus website, I don't know where you got those figures from.

don't buy anything though official retailers, go for the smaller dealer stores like strathfield.

My mum bought a digital camera of ebay for under $100. It was the size of a credit card, good resolution and the quality of photos was great. I can't remember what the brand was but it's bright red and tiny (I believe it come in a variety of colours) If you are any good at google you might be able to track this down.

Prices from Strathfield and Australia Post, although the website might have had some reduced prices recently. Like Linton said, shop around and you should be sweet!

Just had a look on weBay and these are selling for $34 including postage.... but at 100k pixels, this is hardly going to have good resolution. Most mobile phones are higher than that, although the MC60 has the same large image size of 352 x 288. There is another cheapie on eBay called the sportsman, this at least takes pictures in 800x600 resolution.

My advice if you don't want the phone, is to source a good 1 to 2 Mega Pixel camera with compact flash card memory, this way you can get a reasonable number of shots on cheap media. Most of these budget digicams have no memory expansion capabilities, so you are very limited. This will all depend if you want to capture video or use it as a webcam.

Goodluck :)

What do you reckon about this?:

Only 100k image... and no storage expansion..

Here is an image from a Kodak DC25, it is 320 x 240 pixels (was on the cameras low setting)

Here is another image from the same camera, but at the higher resolution of 493 x 373

Thanks for those. They really help. The first image is pretty poor quality. I have a program that can increase the quality of images. Hmmm... I dunno. Would it worth be buying that ebay one for say $15?

The picture of the cat is the sort of size I'm looking for. For $15 inc. postage isn't a bad effort :)

Cap your bid at $8~$12 plus postage, for under $20 it is OK, the camera that took the cat photo cost $500 in 1997 ;)

Can anyone tell me why these cameras are going for so cheap? I can't figure it out.

None of them look like name brands... put a couple in your watch list and see what the end result is.

Got a DSE powerhouse catalogue yesterday... Vodafone have a Motorola Mobile on prepaid with a camera (note that Vodafone prepaids are not usually network locked)

I think they also had a Kodak 3 MP camera for $189 too!
