View Full Version : Lost antenna signal!

As of yesterday, my Kaon has been showing no picture, just a flashing
antenna icon in the top left of the screen! I haven't touched the
antenna cable, anyone got any idea what's going on? Have I blown the
tuner somehow? Or might it be something to do with the antenna on the
building?
Cheers, Robert.

I had the same thing happen when I first connected up my STB. It turned out to be corrosion where the cable connected to the antenna. You may need to cut a short section off the end on the cable and reattach it after cleaning the contact points with sandpaper.

I'll take a punt on this. The Kaon remote is identical to my
Strong 5290, so maybe it's rebadged version, or maybe they just
have the same remote supplier.
Anyway, the Strong 5290 suffers from the flashing antenna icon
problem too. The fix is to power off the unit with the rocker
switch at the back of the unit, wait a moment, then power it
back it up - it should be fine.
It can happen for no apparent reason, however, it consistently
happens if you start recording channel 9 and use the 'power off
after recording' option...if you do this you will be guaranteed
to cop the flashing antenna.
Hope that helps...I'd be curious to know if it works - would
tend to confirm my suspicions it's a rebadged Strong.
Cheer, Cliff

I'm pretty sure they are the same, yeah. The back panel is almost
identical too, I noticed.

And lo, it is! You're a legend! I was just about to get very shitty
about possibly missing the first episode of John Safran Vs God on Monday
night :-). Oops, hang on... it's got half way through tuning itself and
I've got the flashing antenna back. Maybe I'll leave it off for today
and let it cool down and see how that goes.

Really? Well that's very odd. I'll give the guy at HotChip a call again
today.
Cheers, Robert.

If its a known fault between consumers/end users, it says a lot for the
product IMHO.
Not really good enough, is it.

get used to it, most of this stuff is in development and is for enthusiasts.
that what they say about digital stuff.

No I totally disagree, it is a retail end product, available in major
electronics stores, and has been available overseas considerably longer than
here. You don't buy a beta or development product that way.
So my statement stands. Not really good enough.

Sounds a bit dodgy that you got the flashing antenna icon while
rescanning - not sure what to suggest there.
A great source of info can be found at http://www.dtvforum.info.
You might find the Kaon listed there, if not, just look through
threads for the Strong 5200/5290.
I guess that maybe I should qualify the problem with Channel 9
happening in Melbourne...I'm not sure about elsewhere in the
country.
Good luck with SBS too. I've always have dropout issues with it
here - bad when watching but also causes recordings to abort.
Cheers, Cliff

What did you really expect buddy.
They are the cheapest, no frills box on the market, I would be thankful that
you can even turn it on.

Didn't seem to affect anything and the box has been recording fine
tonight.

It's not, but I had a fairly good idea it'd be like this when I bought
it. I didn't want to spend the money Topfield ask for and I'm a computer
nerd and can put up with the dodgy firmware and woeful usability.
Cheers, Robert.
