Any suggestions to what will give decent results for close work at low cost ($500 to $800 range) need something for taking pics of circuit boards etc but don't want to blow the budget.

How about a Canon EOS 3000/300 Film Camera with a 50mm f/1.8 II lens?

Canon 300D w/50mm 2.5 Macro
or if that's too much $$$
then Canon 300D w/50mm 1.8 w/ Kenko extension tubes
Failing that, then go get a Compact Digital, most of them have decent close focusing capabilities.. however it's NOT macro despite what the marketers say.

I have a Canon Powershot S2IS and it takes great macro shots. It has two macro settings. One is closer then the standard macro and I have great shots of flowers as well as insects on leaves. With the 12 X optical zoom as well it is a very handy camera.
