Hi all,

I purchased a Samsung DTB-D700F (Combo DVD/STB) yesterday from Harvey
Norman. The key thing I asked before purchasing was did it have RGB output
and I was told yes. When I plug it into AV1 on my Philips 32PW9617 with a
Scart > Scart cable and select "Composite" it works fine and dandy. However,
when I select Composite+YPbPr (Is this RGB?!?) the image is missing blue so
shows up green. I took it back to them today and they checked it on their
televisions (they didn't have a Philips, but tried on a Grundig) and it was
indeed green. They then plugged in the floor model DTB-D700F and selected
"Composite+YPbPr" and it was fine. They gave me another boxed one and sent
me on my way. I just got home and plugged it in and, of course, it's green.

So, have I just got another dodgy STB, or is there something wrong with my
TV? I know it only has RGB input which is why I was quite insistent on the
STB having it as well.

Hope someone can give me some advice before I take this second one back
tomorrow!

Thanks,
Michael

That what happens when you buy from "hardly normal", Take it back and
ask to audition another one. If they refuse get your money back..
And there's no mystery, If it does RGB out, there will be RGB sockets on
the back. I assume therefore, that your talking about a scart output, Simple
have a scart to RGB adapter in your pocket, ready.

Hi Michael,

Short answer. You have been screwed. Long answer. You can get RGB but
will cost you extra

YPbPr is Component out not RGB. You can buy an Component to RGB
converter from a few places for approx $200.

Personally that combo is nowhere near are good as seperate systems.

Good luck on the refund

Henry

Thanks for the reply - that's what I was afraid of.

Don't worry - I will get my money back. No questions there. I won't walk out
until I'm satisfied.

The only reason I bought that one was the price - I'd gone in on an
unrelated matter and saw this box. I've been looking at getting a digital
STB for a while, and my DVD player is starting to give up the ghost. They
had them there for $499, but one of them was mislabled and I picked it up
for $299. Only reason I bought it.

Will take it back first thing in the morning.

Thanks again,

Michael

Sounds like what the STB actually has is YUV component output rather
than RGB. The cables are coloured red, green, and blue, but it is
most emphatically *not* the same thing as RGB.

Unfortunately the Samsung site has very little information about this
model, so I can't confirm this guess. But generally "component"
(and "YPbPr" and "YCbCr") refer to YUV component, not RGB. And I
know that my Samsung TV has the former rather than the latter for
inputs, so it seems a fair bet.

As I understand it RGB is quite common in Europe, while component
is used in North America. We, of course, get both and thus plenty
a need to check the fine print.
