View Full Version : The only gay show never to hit TV screens
Well, so far we've had ...
.... a woman dating 12 men ... a man dating 12 women ... a woman dating 12
average joe's with muscle-men in tow ... a dwarf man dating 12 dwarf women
with supermodels in tow ... a transvestite pretending to be a woman for 12
straight men ... 5 gay men teaching hetero's to be metro's for their
girlfriend ... a woman dating 12 men where half of them are gay (and like to
wear cowboy outfits for very different reasons) ...
With all this supposedly raunchy and daring shows that are hitting our TV
screens, I'm wondering whether this is all an attempt to try and avoid the
one issue that nearly all of these shows are alluding to, or if this is the
softening up process for the final and inevitable main event ... Gays dating
Gays.
I'm not here to stand up for Gay Rights or anything (not that there's
anything wrong with it, each to their own I say) ... I'm just stating the
obvious omission here. If the TV is anything to by, society is more
acceptable now than ever before of homosexuals in our community, but it
seems that the TV stations are merely dancing (flaming?) around the issue
that it pretends to support 100% - even the Church has ruled that gays and
lesbians should be part of the religious order and not ostrocised as
interpretted from the bible - I'm just quoting here.
There'd be varying points of view about why we are being bombarded by
so-called real-life Days Of Our Lives types of shows these days (to put all
these clashing personalities together in one place like Survivor), but
ultimately the TV stations are very much squeamish of showing even a hint of
what goes on behind closed doors (even when they are just kissing, except
maybe if it's part of a running parody or slight shock value). I personally
haven't watched stuff like Queer As Folk or The L Word because honestly it
doesn't hold any appeal for me (hmm, maybe not TLW, but I haven't been near
a TV to see it yet) - I can't comment much on what has appeared on telly
lately like these shows. The thing is, I'm not into Big Brother or
Australian Idol either, so I am pretty much turned off from much of today's
TV.
Might as well ask for an obligatory comments thread now. Peace.

I thought I read recently that there is one due to air soon.

There seems to be a twist obviously, so it probably won't satisfy you.

Queer as Folk is as Gay dating Gay as your gunna get. The L word I dont know
never really watched it, my house mate watches Queer as Folk though so i
often get snips of it as I walk past the lounge room and it definatly
appears to be the real deal.

It's called "Boy Meet Boy" or something similar. I saw a couple of episodes
in Hawaii last year. It is supposed to air here soon.

But QAF is not a 'reality' show, it's a drama show. Reality shows are what's
being discussed.

A gay soap was made and it was sold into syndication, albeit not very
successfully.
Don't think we have a "reality" show for them, yet.
(BTW, I put reality in quotation marks because of all the words available to
describe an highly artificial, contrived program, "reality" is 'way down on
my list.)
What do we need it for, anyway? I have an adult gay son and I don't think
he does anything interesting simply on the basis of being gay. He's a shoe
salesman. Whoop-de-doo.

well qaf is very popular worldwide, even more so since the canadians/usa series reworked the first uk version. also fox news had an interview with some 32yo or something from a show called boy meets boy or something like that. from looking through this months foxtel guide, im pretty sure i saw something about the show somewhere in there so people can watch it if thats their thing. personally i avoid all real-tv shows like big brother, boy meets boy, australian idol. ugh and double yuck. just really cheap crappy programming and i hate it!!!!!!

And Foxtel charge how much per month to dish up crap like this?
I don't even watch this sort of rubbish on free to air tv. It's aimed at an
18 to 35yo audience with no taste.

how much do they charge? well depends on which package. from between $50 and $99 a month. theres heaps of trashy shows really. jenny jones, maury, jerry springer (which is heaps funny to watch - when transsexuals attack!! meow indeed!), the sharon osbourne show and any no of other shows which make for trashy if comical viewing (cheaters is a riot! - basically if you've been cheated on then ring the program and they'll find out for you and then you get to confront them live with the camera crew in tow!). qaf caused a bit of a stink when it first debuted apparently (i think it was the uk version? which involved characters a lot younger then their american/canadian counterparts) and foxtel pulled it due to the outcry. i think they even had qaf on its own seperate channel at one stage due to the ongoing controversy but then they just put it back on fox8 and let anyone watch it and even promoted it with some racy adverts which was a bit funny given the content of the show isnt exactly afternoon viewing. arena is the station which is getting boy meets boy or whatever its called. and yep i totally agree - 18-35 is the demographic a lot of this programming is aimed at. with cable, basically nothing is off limits. nothing.
