hi guys, i own a dvx558 and was just wondering does anyone else have problems when burning a dvd full of divx files and trying to play them on this particular player?, when i burn the file (same file) on a 700 meg cd it plays fine on the player but when i try to burn the file on a dvd the player sometimes sporadically freezes, skips a second of 2.
Ive tried burning with nero in both iso mode (where the problem occurs) and in udf/iso (my files are below 1 gig each), though when i burn in udf/iso the files all seem to play fine but the player refuses to play the last avi on the list. (skips and goes back to first one)
in both iso and udf/iso modes i do no multisession and all compatibilty.
(this Q adressed to jok11n) was just wondering if anyone reported problems when trying that region free code u posted. i tried it on my dvd player and for some strange reason all my dvds would play scrambled and blocky and avis do the same thing (i had to revert it back to australian region to get it to work again)
Any help on either of these topics would be greatly appreciated.. thanx alot :p

could be your media? i know my dvx558 is not fussy about cds, but is fussy with some dvd media (princo)
btw thanks for your xvid->divx fix, works a treat for some movies i have had trouble with...
Also worth checking the burn speed.
Try one burning at the slowest setting, and see if it makes a difference.

I have used the 558 for quite a while without any major issues, I would also suggest burning your DVD's at a slower speed as andw metioned and see what sort of result you get, also the brand of discs you are using may have some effect. The region free mod has given me no problems, this may suggest that you are having a PAL/NTSC issue, what settings are you using? try setting your player to auto or multi (whichever it is, I can't recall) instead of PAL for the video output. If you are still having issues after that let me know.

Another good test when it comes to DVD media is to try DVDRW the darker dye on these discs seems to perform better than a lot of DVDR media, Also try different software, at the moment I use 4 different programs for burning depending on what media I use.

Using Princo media can give mixed results, only because there are so many different grades of Princo's on the market, I have used Princos without issue (4x A grade discs burnt @ 8x) yet other people have had dramas, your burner may also have some sort of influence on the results also. Post some details of your exact setup, burner type, firmware revision, software version for burning and we can try and give you some better advice. If you have the option try + media and see what the result is, depending on your burner type this may be more successful, I'll post some info tomorrow that explains this.

This article explains the difference between +/- format DVD's, it's a long read but worthwhile.

Noticed that this unit is on sale for $99. This seems a runout price which may not bode to well for updates.

I have put out requests a few times on a few different forums for any feedback for a firmware upgrade request and I have had a total of 1 request which was for something that the chipset can't support anyway, either the user base of this product is happy enough or they're not as active in the community as users of other models. The price is a run out deal as there is a new model coming.

A short introduction:
I am currently traveling Oz, as my job plans in the states fell through gggggrrrr. i came to Oz out of bordem, in the light that it has given me, something else to do until uni, starts again next year.
One of the main problems with this country, well not really a fault, just seems to be a mishap, of sorts is being able to find decent media, of the dvd variety that i have found is generally of a low quality of that compared to the UK, not offering one the price nor to the quality, In regards to Prinico it is commen knowledge that the company uses crap Die, and as it is the die which is at concern when buying dvd media, as no one wants choppy, splicing backups, nor would be the point of corrupt software.
My personal, experience is that you can not really go wrong with any disks that contain Ritek die, thats not to say all the die is good (example G03 - no thanks unless of course you are still using a pioneer AO3 still) but say example G04, and most definatley G05, is some great die, and as it is the die that makes the difference on the quality of the media this is something that needs consideration, when buying media.....
i have included a link of a company that i use back in the Uk, telling you want type of dye the disks contain and what writers are best suited to which disks for any newbies, that are looking to, newer media as this will give you an idea of what you want.....
Where i go........

P.s. i have one of these players named something else but it is the same design and build great player, none the less, and i have no problem what so ever, with choppy/splicey films.....(but i do burn at decent speeds with good media)
Anyway i hope this is at least some help to you peeps.
Happy burning

Most likely that the player you have is from a different factory (there are 1100 DVD factories in mainland China) however you are correct in pointing out that media choice and burn speed can have a lot of influence on how your discs turn out.

Another thing to note is the burner itself, the reliabilty of the media is partially dependent on the DVD burners ability to deal with the media used in it. (my LG destroyed a dozen ultran 4x dvd blanks before I gave up in disgust and threw the rest of the tub out, LG have just released a firmware upgrade specifically addressing its issues with ultran media, this indicates that the media was never the problem).
Personally the most reliable media I have used to date are genuine A grade Princo's.

Another thing which is pure assumption on my part-
Princo claim they have a 60% global market share in DVD R media, if this is the case I would think that most DVD Burner manufacturers would make damn sure their burners had no problems with Princo media.

Peronally I haven't had any problems with Princo either, I've used about 300 so far without a single failure, you are right though, it's part media, part burner version and firmware that determines the success rate. What works for one does not neccessarily work for another.

though i do think that the laser in the dvd player is partly at fault as well as i have played self made dvds on my media (crappy princo) without any problems on my other dvd player but on the dvx558 it seems to get choppy. maybee the laser quality?? i dont know, im looking to return it and get a different player (on the basis of product doesent do what irt says it does) and ill bring in one of my self made dvds to prove it to them.

Could still be your discs at fault, there is a lot of low grade Princo on the market that has been labled as A grade, also what speed are you burning at? Just because another player can play the discs does not remove the disc or mastering from the equation. I don't recall the player making claim to play anything anyway.
