those 3 watts he will draw keeping a red light glowing overnight will run
his power bill through the roof :-)

3 watts is a pittance, agreed.
Praps he's on a generator in the outback? Plenty of people in that situation
with Aurora, so I assume there'd be some with Foxtel.
Also I'm not sure with the UEC but with some units the lnb is still powered
in standby.

Before you all carry on with your smart answers.
We had Optus cable and i left the box on 24/7.
At 3am one morning the smoke detectors went off as my living room was on fire.
The fire investigator said it was caused by a fault in
something electrical left on in the room.
The only thing on was the cable box.
Now do you understand why?

The system uses 15 watts on standby. If he's on standby for 10 hours/day,
he'll use about $10 of power per year for the privilege. Some people would
rather spend that money on a few good beers.
Then there are safety issues. Some people, drawing on experience, figure
that electrical equipment left on when unattended is a hazard. In fact,
that's standard OH&S training.

Add up all the "few" watts that so many devices in our homes seem to consume
when on standby and you easily rack up a big power bill.

A lot of things, satellite receivers hi-Fi's power Amp's etc have a stand-by
mode,, The main reason to live the thing switched on is to stop the
Capacitors in the power supply from drying out, Which can happen, also Pay
provider's do upgrade there software at night, and for this to happen the
unit must be left in stand-by mode.
