hi, just wondering if anyone has any advice. I'm getting some flickering (jumping) of the picture when I use 1080i from the STB, but if I use 576p it's crystal clear - although I suspect not HD?

I'm using a composite cable direct into the TV, and both units are Panasonic (TX-86PW200A TV and TU-HDT104A STB).

The STB allows you to "fix" the output to a particular mode, ie: 1080i, when available, however I have had to change it back to 576p because the flicker is so bad.

Your TV set is not HD compatible.

Your TV set is not HD compatible.

oh, I see... so "HD Inputs (1080i/576P)* when connected to a HD Digital receiver" just means it has the HD input plugs on the back, does it?

As usual another informative and concise answer... can you elaborate?

Sorry can't help but I note something interesting. I have a panasonic
100a which is the earlier version of your TV and I use it with
the DGTec 200a HD STB. I have the STB set to 1080i output and
the picture is superb. However, if I switch the STB to 576p output
then the picture slowly slides to the left and then jumps
back right. The width of this flicker is about 2 vertical
lines and it occurs at a period of about 0.5 sec. It is unwatchable.

Is this something like your seeing? All I put it down to is that my
Panasonic has a technical incompatability with how the DGTec does 576p.
So possibly in your case your STB is outputting 576p as the TV
likes it but not 1080i? Very odd that this would occur with
the same brand units though?

similar, although mine is horizontal, and just jumps from one position to the other... only a couple of mm up or down, but it makes it very irritating to watch. I'm wondering if my eyes are sensitive to interlaced, but surely it can't be that bad?

My flicker is left then right, i.e. horizontal as well.

Your problem certainly sounds like a fault with the STB/TV, not your
eyes! I can assure you that 1080i on your TV will give a rock steady
superb picture as mine is as good as I've ever seen and I'm told that
the 200a is apparently better still. Can you try somebody else's STB on
1080i with your TV and prove which unit is at fault? Plenty of people
have the DGtec 2000a like me and it should give a perfect image on
1080i. Don't settle for 576p, your TV can do better.

apologies... I mean it flickers about 2 horizontal lines... ie: up and down. anyhow, it's still bad, no matter how you say it. Is there really such a big difference between 1080i and 576p? I guess I have not seen real 1080i yet, but the 576p still looks pretty good.

update: just tried it on 576i mode also, and that flickers too, though not quite as bad as 1080i. looks like its the interlaced mode that's causing my grief.
