A new player in town?
http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880n.html
http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880nspec.html
http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880n_lan.html
Mentioned briefly in another forum. Impressive spec.
Anyone seen or owned one?
The distributor in North Melbourne (http://www.com-tek.com.au/dvdplayer.htm) seems to only carry the other model with no ethernet connection http://www.momitsu.com/dvd_880.html
looks interesting. I wonder what chipset it's using? My guess is ESS, since it doesn't support qpel or GMC, but I can't see it mentioned anywhere.
Good to see DVI / HD support too. I'm not sure, but I think this is the first player to support this? (I don't know much about High Def, it's not an area I've looked at yet :))
An another thing of interest - quote:
MP4 file recommend bite rate and size Bite Rate on CD Media < 1500 kbit/s
Bite Rate on DVD Media < 3000 kbit/s
Single file Maxi ma size: 2GB
In order to make sure all your files cab be played well, please set the total size of DVD-R (+R/-RW/+RW) <4GB
It's common sense that the player could get data off the DVD quicker than the CD (as others have already stated here on the topic of lagging in playback), but good to see them providing the info up front.

this thing has been delayed a number of times, and it's gotten to the point that the movie companies are suing sigma designs to stop them selling decoder chips to "non-authorised" equipment manufacturers. lots of threads around on the topic if you go searching

V880 $490
V880N $660
Very pricy.
Would check out the price of the other distributor at Perth.

I am not so sure these are even the Sigma 8620L chipset, if they are not, they are overpriced for sure.

I'm 99% sure the V880n is based on the Sigma 85xx series chipset (remember this player has been promised for a looooong time now...)
The extra $$$ being charged is ostensibly for the DVI port and the ability to upscale DVD output to 720p and 1080i.

Still DVI or not its way too expensive for a 85XX chipset, its basically a Neuston or Pinnacle with a DVD loader.

I think it will be a hard sell, can't see too many of them getting picked up here. The whole idea of upscaling, DVI etc is not exactly the kind of thing that you would think of when dealing with DivX files, this stuff generally wants the highest quality files to start with, not really what I would classify DivX, Mpeg4 etc files as.

Good point jok11n... most of the people buying DivX players (from my perspective) are the younger generation that are not necessarily cashed up.
So any more than $200~$300 then it is priced out of the market. For people actually wanting DVI for their projector or similar, may not be too keen buying a 'relatively' unknown brand for $400~$700.
Still, I'd be happy to review one ;)

From reading some other threads regarding the V880, they're mainly being bought by people with high-end plasma/projector setups for their DVD playback quality through DVI. DivX/Mpeg4 is seen to be a bonus more than anything else.
Haven't seen one in action myself, but many seem to be comparing the quality of the DVD playback to machines in the $700-$1000 bracket. That said, I don't see what the attraction of the v880n will be to people primarily interested in the DVD playback, as you're paying the extra $$$ for the capability to stream (presumably Mpeg4) video from a PC.
Based on USA/European pricing, the non-networked version should be available here for closer to $300, but they always seem to be in short supply, keeping local prices high.

What other manufacturers are bringing out Mpeg4/DVD player with ethernet connection?
Heard that Zensonic and D-Link are doing it. Netgear as well?

Many of these networked media players don't include a DVD loader, forcing you to have another machine just to watch DVDs.
This seems kind of silly to me...

Had a look at an engineering sample of a high def DVD player today that upscaled to 1080i, without a doubt the best picture quality that I have ever seen from a DVD player, very impressive. Will be quite a lot cheaper than these Momitsu players, a few less features, but if you have a high def monitor definately worth looking at, should sell for about half the price of the Momitsu which is a bonus.

Hi Jok11n,
What video output connectors (DVI/HDMI, etc.) did this unit have?

Oh, and did it support 576p and upscaling to 720p as well?

It wasn't a final shipping sample so the specs could change, it had composite, component, S-Video and VGA outputs, it did 576p, 720p and 1080i, I was using it via component on a sample TV (76cm W/S High Def CRT) that I have at the moment at 1080i and the picture was unbelievable. This unit will be cheap for what it offers, likely other units will follow also.

... but no capability to output digital video (sob!)
Surely this will be the "must have" capability in the world of HD home theatre.
