Anybody know?

Firmware got as far as it could from a factory point of view, the remaining issues are waiting on ESS for answers. All of the ESS based players are in the same boat at the moment.

My oppinion: We won't see any new firmware from ESS

I guess that chip used for xms-888 its now old and they cant be bothered.

I feel that the mpeg4 or divx/xvid players are very much at the mercy of the manufacturers (of chipset and players). If they stop coming up with new firmware upgrade from time to time then more and more of the newer files would not be playable.

Does anybody have an email address for ESS where we could try to put them under a bit of pressure?

Personally, I'll never buy another product where I'm relying on the promise of a firmware upgrade to make it work to my satisfaction. Thanks to my local SCR store for taking back my XMS-888, but it was the prospect of firmware upgrades that delayed that return to the point where I really needed to rely on their good will.

I eventually bought a Zensonic Z330, but only after the firmware upgrade that enabled subtitle support.

had to harp on it fellas, i have an XMS 888 myself, but until divx players have easily upgradable codecs, i am gonna stick to the Xbox solution for now

I'm sure things will improve in the future but there is nothing more frustating than having files which won't play
